Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him and said: "You are my messenger to the people of Makkah. Tell them that the Messenger of Allah conveys his greetings of peace to you and commands you to do three things: do not swear by other than Allah." Then the narrator mentioned the complete (hadith), which has already passed.
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Abd al-Karim bin Abi al-Mukhariq, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not swear by idols, do not swear by your fathers; swear by Allah."
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, and (al-Tabarani) added these words: "Swear by Allah, for He loves that you swear by Him, and do not swear with the oath of Satan." Al-Tabarani's chain contains narrators who are mastur (of unknown status), and al-Bazzar's chain is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever swears an oath, he becomes as he said: if he said, 'I am a Jew,' then he is a Jew; if he said, 'I am a Christian,' then he is a Christian; and if he said, 'I am a Magian,' then he is a Magian."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains Ubays bin Maymun, who is matruk (abandoned).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A Jew came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Your community would be an excellent community, were it not that they set up equals (with Allah)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How do they set up equals?" He said: "They say: 'Whatever Allah wills and you will.'" The narrator said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'then you will.'" He also said: "Your community would be an excellent community, were it not that they associate partners (with Allah)." He explained that they say: "By the right of so-and-so" and "By the life of so-and-so." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever must swear, let him swear only by Allah Almighty."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Ubayd bin al-Qasim, who is a liar and matruk (abandoned).
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: That I swear falsely by Allah is dearer to me than that I swear truthfully by other than Him.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not swear with the oath of Satan, which is that one of you says: "By the might of Allah." Rather, say as Allah has said: "Allah, the Lord of Might."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Abd al-Rahman al-Mas'udi, who is thiqah (trustworthy), but his memory became confused.
