Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Part of a man's understanding is that he adopts gentleness (moderation) in his livelihood."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Abu Bakr bin Abi Maryam, whose memory had become confused (ikhtilat).

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Moderation in one's livelihood is better than some trade (that is, some forms of trade)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Abdullah bin Salih al-Misri. Abd al-Malik bin Shu'ayb said: he is thiqah (trustworthy) and reliable, while a group declared him da'if (weak).
