The sacrifice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered two rams whose white predominated over the black, and both were castrated. He said: "One of the two is on behalf of everyone who bears witness to tawhid (the Oneness of Allah) and that I have conveyed (the message), and the other was on behalf of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his household." The narrator states: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sufficed for us.
Ahmad recorded it; its chain is hasan (good), and this wording is his.

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), states: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered sacrifice, he would buy two fat rams with horns, whose white predominated over the black (or which were entirely white). When he finished the prayer, he delivered the sermon; then he came to one of the two while he was at the Eid prayer ground, slaughtered it, and then said: "O Allah! This is on behalf of every person of my entire Ummah who bears witness to Your Oneness (tawhid) and bears witness that I have conveyed (the message)." Then the other animal was brought, and he slaughtered it and then said: "O Allah! This is on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad." He fed the meat of both to the poor, and he and his household also ate of it. The narrator states: Then several years passed in which no one of Banu Hashim would offer sacrifice, because the Messenger of Allah had fulfilled this duty on our behalf.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, Ahmad recorded something similar, and Tabarani recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir.

In al-Mu'jam al-Awsat this is transmitted from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him); he states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed a ram and then said: "This is on my behalf and on behalf of my Ummah." Tabarani recorded a similar narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The chain of Ahmad and al-Bazzar is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought two horned, piebald (whose white predominated over the black), fat, castrated rams. He laid one of them down and then recited: "In the name of Allah, seeking blessing, Allah is the Greatest. O Allah! This is on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad." Then he laid the other down and recited: "In the name of Allah, seeking blessing, Allah is the Greatest. This is on behalf of Muhammad and his Ummah, and on behalf of whoever bears witness to Your Oneness (tawhid) and bears witness that I have conveyed (the message)."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good). A hadith is transmitted from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) which Abu Dawud recorded in abridged form.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) states: On the day of sacrifice, two piebald rams (with more white) were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). After that the narrator mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about one of the two: "This is on behalf of Muhammad and his household," and said about the other: "This is on behalf of every member of my Ummah who is unable to offer sacrifice." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: In the "Sunan" this narration is transmitted from this Companion: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed a horned, fat ram."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and this wording is his; Ahmad recorded it in abridged form, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed two young, castrated rams.
Ahmad and Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The narrator states: Those two had been presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a gift. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Hajjaj bin Artah, who is thiqah (trustworthy), but he is a mudallis (one who practises tadlis).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed two horned white rams. While sacrificing one of them he said: "In the name of Allah, seeking blessing. O Allah! This is (received) from You and is for You. This is on behalf of Muhammad and his household." Then he sacrificed the other and said: "In the name of Allah, seeking blessing. O Allah! This is (received) from You and is for You, and this is on behalf of every member of my Ummah who affirms Your Oneness."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, al-Hajjaj bin Artah, who is thiqah (trustworthy), but he is a mudallis (one who practises tadlis).

Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed two white rams. While slaughtering the first he said: "This is on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad," and while slaughtering the second he said: "This is on behalf of every member of my Ummah who believes in me and affirms my truthfulness."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, as a narration of Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Talhah from his grandfather, although he did not live in his time. Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed two horned white rams, one of which was on behalf of himself and his household, and the other on behalf of himself and every member of his Ummah who would not offer sacrifice. (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded this narration with doubt, as to whether it is transmitted from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) or from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Isa bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Farwah, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered a horned, large-eyed, uncastrated ram.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and this wording is his; its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed two white rams. At the time of slaughtering them he placed his foot on their sides and then said: "O Allah! This is (received) from You and is for You. O Allah! Accept this from Muhammad."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Khirash, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) and a group declared da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed two white rams. While slaughtering one of them he said: "O Allah! This is on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad," and while sacrificing the other he said: "O Allah! This is on behalf of every member of my Ummah who bears witness to Your Oneness (tawhid) and bears witness to my conveying (of the message)."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Nasr bin Hajib, whom Ibn Adi called thiqah (trustworthy) and a group called da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Abi Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with him) states that he bought a horned, large-eyed ram. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it and said: "This looks like the ram that Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) slaughtered." A man from the Ansar went and bought a similar animal for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took it and sacrificed it.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
