عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ مِخْنَفٍ قَالَ : انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : " هَلْ تَعْرِفُونَهَا ؟ " . قَالَ : فَمَا أَدْرِي مَا رَجَعُوا إِلَيْهِ . فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " عَلَى أَهْلِ كُلِّ بَيْتٍ أَنْ يَذْبَحُوا شَاةً فِي كُلِّ رَجَبٍ ، وَكُلِّ أَضْحَى شَاةً " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَفِيهِ عَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ بْنُ أَبِي الْمُخَارِقِ ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .

Sayyiduna Habib bin Mikhnaf (may Allah be pleased with him) states: On the day of Arafah I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was saying, "Do you recognise it?" The narrator says: I do not know what reply the people gave him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is binding on the people of every household to slaughter a goat in every Rajab, and to slaughter a goat at every Eid al-Adha."

وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - نَهَى عَنِ الْعَتِيرَةِ ، وَكَانَتْ ذَبِيحَةً يَذْبَحُونَهَا فِي رَجَبٍ فَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْهَا وَأَمَرَهُمْ بِالْأُضْحِيَّةِ .
قُلْتُ : لَهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ وَغَيْرِهِ النَّهْيُ عَنِ الْعَتِيرَةِ فَقَطْ بِغَيْرِ سِيَاقِهِ أَيْضًا .
رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ ، وَفِيهِ ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، وَحَدِيثُهُ حَسَنٌ .

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the atirah. It was a sacrifice those people used to slaughter in the month of Rajab; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them from it and ordered them to offer sacrifice on Eid al-Adha. وَعَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ أُسَيْدٍ قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ - رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا - وَمَا يُضَحِّيَانِ مَخَافَةَ يُسْتَنُّ [ بِهِمَا ] فَحَمَلَنِي أَهْلِي عَلَى الْجَفَاءِ بَعْدَ أَنْ عَلِمْتُ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ حَتَّى إِنِّي لَأُضَحِّي عَنْ كُلٍّ .

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him) states: I saw Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) not offering sacrifice, out of fear that people would begin following them both (in it). But then my family pushed me into excess, even though I knew the Sunnah; they compelled me to offer a sacrifice on behalf of every single member.
