The affairs of Makkah: the adhan, custodianship of the Kaaba and other matters

Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the office of the adhan to us and to our clients (mawali), the office of providing water to the pilgrims (siqayah) to Banu Hashim, and the office of keeping the Ka'bah (hijabah) to Banu Abd al-Dar.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Hudhayl bin Bilal al-Ash'ari, whom Ahmad and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), and al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and others declared da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Banu Talhah, take it, forever and from generation to generation (it will remain with you); none will take it from you except a wrongdoer." The narrator says: This refers to the office of keeping the Ka'bah (hijabah, that is, holding its key).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin al-Mu'ammal, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) and said: "He makes mistakes"; according to one report Yahya bin Ma'in declared him thiqah, and a group declared him da'if (weak).

Abu al-Tufayl narrates: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had a dispute with Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) about the siqayah (providing water to the pilgrims). Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah, Sayyiduna Amir bin Makhramah bin Nawfal and Sayyiduna Azhar bin Abd Awf (may Allah be pleased with them) testified that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had handed this office to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of the Conquest of Makkah.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, al-Waqidi, about whom there is much criticism, though he has also been declared trustworthy.

Abdullah bin Zurayr narrates: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to give you the treasury." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) made this request to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will give you something that is better for you than that; it will not diminish you, nor will you diminish it." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them the office of the "siqayah" (providing water to the pilgrims).
Abu Ya'la recorded it.
This narration is "mursal"; the narrator Abdullah bin Zurayr did not live at the time of this incident.

Al-Bazzar recorded this narration from Abdullah bin Abi Razin, from his father, from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Ask the Messenger of Allah to give us the hijabah (keeping of the Ka'bah)." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) made this request to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will give you the office of the siqayah; it will not diminish you, nor will you diminish it." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to appoint you as an official for collecting the sadaqat (charities)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will not appoint you as an official over the washings of people's sins." The narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).
