Al-Harith bin al-Khazraj narrates from his father: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: (The narrator says:) "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the Angel of Death at the head of a man from the Ansar and said: 'O Angel of Death! Be gentle with my companion, for he is a believer.' The Angel of Death said: 'Be at ease and let your eyes be cooled. Know that I am gentle with every believer. O Muhammad, know that when I take the soul of a human being and someone from his family cries out in wailing, I stand in the doorway with his soul with me, and I ask: Who is this person? By Allah, we have not wronged him, we have not taken his soul before his appointed time, nor have we hastened ahead of his decreed measure, so what sin is ours in taking his soul? If you are pleased with what Allah Almighty has decreed, you will be rewarded, and if you grieve and are displeased, a burden will fall upon you. No reproach can be made against us in this matter, for we must keep coming to you time after time, so be careful, be careful! O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Every household, whether its dwelling is made of hair or of clay, whether it belongs to a righteous person or a sinner, whether it is on soft ground or on a mountain, I go round every household daily, to the point that I know their young and their old better than they know themselves. By Allah, O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! If I intended to take the soul of a fly, I would not have the power to do so until Allah Almighty gives permission to take its soul.'"
Ja'far bin Muhammad (perhaps this refers to Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq) says: It has reached me that the Angel of Death goes round to people's homes at the times of the prayers, and when, near death, he finds someone who used to perform the prayers regularly, the Angel of Death comes close to him and Satan is driven away from that person, and the Angel of Death prompts him to say 'La ilaha illallah Muhammadun Rasulullah' (There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah). And that is a most excellent state.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Umar bin Shamir al-Ju'fi and al-Harith bin al-Khazraj; I have not found anyone who has given a biography of either of them. The remaining narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih. Al-Bazzar recorded part of this narration up to the words: "Know that I am gentle with every believer."

Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to visit a man from the Ansar who was ill. When he came to him, he placed his blessed hand on his forehead and asked: "How do you feel?" He gave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) no reply. It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! His attention is not on you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave me alone with him." So the people got up and went out from the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lifted his blessed hand, and the sick man gestured that he should put his blessed hand back where it had been before. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O so-and-so, how do you feel?" He said: "I feel good. Two things have come to me; one of them is white and the other black." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which of them is closer to you?" He replied: "The black one." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That means the good is little and the evil is much." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Favour me with a supplication." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: "O Allah, forgive the thing that is much (that is, the sins) and increase the thing that is little (that is, the good)." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What do you see?" He said: "Good, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you. The good is increasing, and I see the evil fading away, and the black thing is drawing back from me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which of your deeds seems most fitting to you?" He replied: "I used to give people water to drink." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen: did you find anything different in me?" Sayyiduna Salman said: "Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you. I have seen you in various kinds of situations, but I have never seen you in a situation like today's." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am seeing what this man is facing. Every single vein feels the pain of death separately."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Al-Bazzar recorded a similar narration. Its chain contains Musa bin Ubaydah, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the soul of the believer is taken, the people of mercy from among Allah's servants meet it just as a bearer of glad tidings is met in the world. They say: 'Look at your companion; he has found rest, for before this he was in severe distress.' Then they ask him: 'How is so-and-so? How is so-and-so? How is so-and-so? Has she married?' When they ask him about a person who died before him, he says: 'Alas, he died before me!' Then the others say: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return).' He must have been taken to his abode, al-Hawiyah (that is, Hell), and what an evil abode it is, and what an evil nurturer! (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) Your deeds are presented to your close relatives and kinsfolk from among the people of the Hereafter. If the deed is good, they are pleased with it and rejoice, and they say: 'O Allah! This is Your grace and Your mercy, so complete Your blessing upon him and grant him death upon it.' And the deed of the one who does evil is also presented to them, and they say: 'O Allah! Grant him the ability to do a righteous deed through which You become pleased with him and bring him near to You.'"
