Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to visit a man from the Ansar who was ill. When he came to him, he placed his blessed hand on his forehead and asked: "How do you feel?" He gave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) no reply. It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! His attention is not on you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave me alone with him." So the people got up and went out from the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lifted his blessed hand, and the sick man gestured that he should put his blessed hand back where it had been before. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O so-and-so, how do you feel?" He said: "I feel good. Two things have come to me; one of them is white and the other black." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which of them is closer to you?" He replied: "The black one." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That means the good is little and the evil is much." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Favour me with a supplication." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: "O Allah, forgive the thing that is much (that is, the sins) and increase the thing that is little (that is, the good)." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What do you see?" He said: "Good, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you. The good is increasing, and I see the evil fading away, and the black thing is drawing back from me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which of your deeds seems most fitting to you?" He replied: "I used to give people water to drink." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen: did you find anything different in me?" Sayyiduna Salman said: "Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you. I have seen you in various kinds of situations, but I have never seen you in a situation like today's." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am seeing what this man is facing. Every single vein feels the pain of death separately."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Al-Bazzar recorded a similar narration. Its chain contains Musa bin Ubaydah, who is da'if (weak).
