رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When a servant is martyred in the path of Allah, then when the first drop of his blood falls on the ground, Allah Almighty wipes out all his sins. Then Allah Almighty sends for him a sheet from Paradise in which his soul is taken, and he is given a body from Paradise, until his soul is placed into that body. Then the angels take him upward, and it is as though he had been with those angels since the day Allah Almighty created him, until he is presented before the Most Merciful. He falls into prostration before the angels, and the angels prostrate after him. Then he is forgiven, and then he is purified. Then the command is given concerning him that he be taken to the martyrs, and he finds the martyrs in green gardens and in garments of silk. With them are a bull and a fish, which feed them every day something they were not fed the previous day. The fish lives in the rivers of Paradise and eats things of every flavour from the rivers of Paradise. When evening comes, the bull strikes it with its horn and slaughters it, and they eat its meat and find in its meat the flavour of everything in the rivers of Paradise. The bull keeps grazing in Paradise and eating the fruits of Paradise. When morning comes, the fish comes to it, strikes it with its tail and slaughters it, and they eat the meat of that bull and find in its meat the flavour of every fruit of Paradise. They keep looking at their dwellings and keep supplicating to Allah Almighty that the Hour be established.
When Allah Almighty causes a believing servant to die, He sends to him two angels with cloth from Paradise and with provision (that is, various things) from Paradise, and He says: "O soul at peace! Come out to delight and provision (or mercy), and to a Lord who is not angry. Come out! Good is what you have sent ahead." When that soul comes out, it is like the purest fragrance of musk that any one of you has ever smelled with his nose. There are angels in the heaven who say: "Glory be to Allah! Today a pure soul has come from the earth." Whatever gate that soul passes by is opened for it, and whatever angel it passes by prays for mercy for it and intercedes for it, until it is brought into the presence of Allah Almighty. The angels prostrate before it and say: "O our Lord! This is Your servant so-and-so, whom we have caused to die, and You know him better." The Lord says: "Command him to prostrate." So that soul falls into prostration. Then Mika'il is called and it is said: "Place this soul with the souls of the believers; on the Day of Resurrection I will ask you about it." Then the command is given concerning his body, and (his grave) is widened for him, its length seventy cubits and its breadth seventy cubits, and provision (that is, various blessings) is placed in it for him, and silk is spread out for him. If he knew (some of) the Qur'an, it gives him light; otherwise a light like the light of the sun is placed for him. Then a door towards Paradise is opened for him, and he looks at his abode morning and evening.
When Allah Almighty causes a disbeliever to die, He sends two angels to him, and with them He sends a cloth which is extremely foul-smelling and extremely coarse, and He says: "O wicked soul! Come out to Hell, to a painful punishment and to an angry Lord. Come out! Evil is what you sent ahead." It comes out like the most foul-smelling carcass whose stench any person has ever smelled with his nose. There are angels on every heaven who say: "Glory be to Allah! A carcass and a wicked soul has come from the earth." The gate of the heaven is not opened for it. Then the command is given concerning his body, and his grave is made narrow upon him, and it is filled with snakes like the necks of Bactrian camels. Those snakes eat the person's flesh and leave nothing even of his bones. Then angels are sent upon him who are deaf and blind, with iron maces in their hands. They cannot see him so as to have mercy on him, and they cannot hear his voice so as to have mercy on him. They beat him and leave him senseless. Then a door of Hell is opened for that person, and he looks at his abode morning and evening, and he prays to Allah Almighty that this state of his may last forever so that he does not have to reach Hell beyond it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
