عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ - رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا - أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - كَانَ لَا يَنَامُ إِلَّا وَالسِّوَاكُ عِنْدَهُ فَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ بَدَأَ بِالسِّوَاكِ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَفِيهِ مَنْ لَمْ يُسَمَّ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slept, the tooth-stick (miswak) would be with him, and whenever he woke up, he would first of all use the miswak.
This narration was recorded by Imam Ahmad; its chain contains a narrator whose name has not been given.

وَعَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ اسْتَنْجَى وَتَوَضَّأَ وَاسْتَاكَ ثُمَّ يَبْعَثُ يَطْلُبُ الطِّيبَ فِي رَبَاعِ نِسَائِهِ .
رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ مُوَثَّقُونَ .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up at night, he would cleanse himself after relieving himself, then perform ablution and use the miswak. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would ask for perfume in the houses of his wives.
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Bazzar, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ : ذُكِرَ النَّوْمُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ : " نَامُوا فَإِذَا انْتَبَهْتُمْ فَاسْتَنُّوا " .
رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ ، وَفِيهِ يَحْيَى بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ ضَعَّفَهُ الدَّارَقُطْنِيُّ وَغَيْرُهُ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sleep was mentioned before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sleep! And when you wake up, use the miswak!"
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Bazzar; its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin al-Mundhir, whom Imam al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) and others declared da'if (weak).

وَعَنْ رَبِيعَةَ الْجَرْشِيِّ قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ : مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَقُولُ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ؟ وَبِمَا كَانَ يَسْتَفْتِحُ ؟ فَقَالَتْ : كَانَ يُكَبِّرُ عَشْرًا وَيَحْمَدُ عَشْرًا وَيُسَبِّحُ عَشْرًا وَيُهَلِّلُ عَشْرًا وَيَسْتَغْفِرُ عَشْرًا ، وَيَقُولُ : " اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَاهْدِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي " عَشْرًا ، وَيَقُولُ : " اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الضِّيقِ يَوْمَ الْحِسَابِ " عَشْرًا .
قُلْتُ : رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ بِاخْتِصَارٍ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالْطَبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
Rabi'ah al-Jurashi says: I asked Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her): "What did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recite when he woke up at night, and with what did he begin?" She said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite 'Allahu akbar' ten times, 'Alhamdulillah' ten times, 'Subhanallah' ten times, 'La ilaha illallah' ten times and 'Astaghfirullah' ten times. Then he would recite: 'O Allah! Forgive me, keep me firm on guidance and grant me provision.' He would recite (this phrase mentioned above) ten times. And he would recite (the following phrase): 'O Allah! I seek refuge in You from hardship on the Day of Reckoning.' This too he would recite ten times."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
This narration was recorded by Imam Abu Dawud in abridged form.
This narration was recorded by Imam Ahmad and by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are "thiqat" (trustworthy).

وَعَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ جُنَادَةَ قَالَ : شَهِدْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - [حَنِيفًا]فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ : " مَنْ قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَمَضْمَضَ فَاهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ : سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ غُفِرَتْ لَهُ ذُنُوبُهُ إِلَّا الدِّمَاءَ وَالْأَمْوَالَ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَبْطُلُ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَفِيهِ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ الْعَوْفِيُّ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Junadah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at "Hanif", and I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever gets up at night, performs ablution, rinses his mouth and then recites 'Subhanallah' one hundred times, 'Alhamdulillah' one hundred times and 'La ilaha illallah' one hundred times, his sins are forgiven, except for (matters of) bloodshed and property, for these are not annulled."
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, al-Husayn bin al-Hasan bin Atiyyah al-Awfi, who is "da'if" (weak).

وَعَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " إِذَا نَامَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَلْيَضَعْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ قَبْضَةً مِنْ تُرَابٍ فَإِذَا انْتَبَهَ فَلْيُحَصِّبْ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ وَالْكَبِيرِ ، وَالْبَزَّارُ ، وَفِيهِ أَيُّوبُ بْنُ عُتْبَةَ وَثَّقَهُ أَحْمَدُ فِي رِوَايَةٍ ، وَكَذَلِكَ ابْنُ مَعِينٍ ، وَضَعَّفَاهُ فِي رِوَايَةٍ ، وَضَعَّفَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ وَمُسْلِمٌ وَجَمَاعَةٌ .
Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person is about to sleep at night, intending to pray at night, he should place a handful of dust on his right side; and if he wakes up, he should then throw the pebbles to his left side."
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and Imam al-Bazzar also recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ayyub bin Utbah, whom Imam Ahmad, according to one report, declared "thiqah" (trustworthy), and Yahya bin Ma'in did the same; according to one report they declared him da'if (weak), and Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), Imam Muslim and a group called him da'if (weak).

وَعَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَقُولُ : " رَجُلَانِ مِنْ أُمَّتِي يَقُومُ أَحَدُهُمَا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَيُعَالِجُ نَفْسَهُ إِلَى الطَّهُورِ وَعَلَيْهِ عُقَدٌ فَيَتَوَضَّأُ فَإِذَا وَضَّأَ يَدَهُ انْحَلَّتْ عُقْدَةٌ وَإِذَا وَضَّأَ وَجْهَهُ انْحَلَّتْ عُقْدَةٌ وَإِذَا مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ انْحَلَّتْ عُقْدَةٌ وَإِذَا وَضَّأَ رِجْلَيْهِ انْحَلَّتْ عُقْدَةٌ فَيَقُولُ الرَّبُّ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - الَّذِي وَرَاءَ الْحِجَابِ : انْظُرُوا إِلَى عَبْدِي هَذَا يُعَالِجُ نَفْسَهُ مَا سَأَلَنِي عَبْدِي هَذَا فَهُوَ لَهُ " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَفِيهِ ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ وَفِيهِ كَلَامٌ .
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There are two kinds of people from my Ummah. One of them gets up at night and prepares himself for purification while there are knots tied upon him. He performs ablution: when he washes his hands, a knot is undone; when he washes his face, a knot is undone; when he wipes his head, a knot is undone; when he washes his feet, a knot is undone. Then my Lord, from behind the veil, says: 'Look at this servant of Mine, who is preparing himself for this! Whatever My servant asks of Me, he will receive it.'"
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, and there is criticism concerning him.
