Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 3586

Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person is about to sleep at night, intending to pray at night, he should place a handful of dust on his right side; and if he wakes up, he should then throw the pebbles to his left side."
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and Imam al-Bazzar also recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ayyub bin Utbah, whom Imam Ahmad, according to one report, declared "thiqah" (trustworthy), and Yahya bin Ma'in did the same; according to one report they declared him da'if (weak), and Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), Imam Muslim and a group called him da'if (weak).
