Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: In the witr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah al-A'la in the first rak'ah, Surah al-Kafirun in the second rak'ah, and Surah al-Ikhlas in the third rak'ah.
Imam Abu Ya'la, Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded this narration; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Malik bin al-Walid bin Ma'dan, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and a group declared him da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you recite in the witr? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surah al-A'la, Surah al-Kafirun and Surah al-Ikhlas.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, al-Sari bin Isma'il, who is extremely da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): In the first rak'ah of witr he would recite Surah al-A'la, in the second rak'ah Surah al-Kafirun, and in the third rak'ah Surah al-Ikhlas and al-Mu'awwidhatayn (the last two surahs).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat through al-Miqdam bin Dawud, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): In the witr he would recite Surah al-A'la, Surah al-Kafirun and Surah al-Ikhlas.
Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded this narration; its chain contains a narrator, Sa'id bin Sinan, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): In the witr he would recite Surah al-A'la, Surah al-Kafirun and Surah al-Ikhlas. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) has also recorded this narration, but he did not mention Surah al-Kafirun and Surah al-Ikhlas.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, al-Hajjaj bin Artah, about whom criticism has been made.
Abd al-Rahman bin Sabrah, that is, Abu Khaythamah, narrates: His father asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): What should be recited in the witr? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surah al-A'la in the first rak'ah, Surah al-Kafirun in the second rak'ah, and Surah al-Ikhlas in the third rak'ah (should be recited). In one narration the wording is: He says: My father and I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); after this the hadith is as before.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Isma'il bin Razin. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in the book al-Thiqat, and al-Azdi says: The hadith scholars have criticised him.
