Abd al-Rahman bin Sabrah, that is, Abu Khaythamah, narrates: His father asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): What should be recited in the witr? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surah al-A'la in the first rak'ah, Surah al-Kafirun in the second rak'ah, and Surah al-Ikhlas in the third rak'ah (should be recited). In one narration the wording is: He says: My father and I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); after this the hadith is as before.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Isma'il bin Razin. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in the book al-Thiqat, and al-Azdi says: The hadith scholars have criticised him.
