Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, except that he worded it: "It is a sin, and its expiation is burying it." The narrators of Ahmad have been deemed trustworthy (muwaththaq).

Hadith Takhrij«أخرجه المعجم الكبير للطبراني برقم: 7960»
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and began the prayer, and he saw spittle in the direction of the qiblah. He took off his sandals, then walked over to it and scraped it off; he did this three times. When he had completed his prayer, he turned his face towards the people, praised and glorified Allah Almighty, and then said: "O people! When any one of you stands in prayer, he stands in a mighty place before a mighty Lord, and he asks for a mighty thing: success through Paradise and deliverance from Hell. So when any one of you stands for prayer, he stands before Allah Almighty, facing his Lord; his angel is on his right and his companion (qarin) is on his left. So let none of you ever spit in front of him or to his right; he should spit to his left or beneath his foot, then rub it, and rub it hard, for he is only rubbing the ear of Satan. By the One who sent me with the truth! If the veils between you and him were removed, or he were given permission to speak, he would complain of what he suffers from that."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir through the narration of Ubaydullah bin Zahr from Ali bin Yazid, and both of these narrators are da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded a man to lead the people in the Zuhr prayer. While leading the people in prayer, that man spat towards the qiblah. When the time of the Asr prayer came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to another man (to lead the prayer). The first man became fearful; he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Has something been revealed about me?" the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No! But you spat in front of you while you were leading the people, and so you have harmed Allah Almighty and His angels."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
