Sayyiduna al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Obey your rulers, whoever they may be. If they command you with something that I have brought to you, they will be rewarded for it and you will be rewarded for obeying them. And if they command you with something that I have not brought to you, its burden will be upon them and you will be free of it. That is because when you come before Allah Almighty, you will say: 'Our Lord, there is no injustice.' They will say: 'There is no injustice.' Then you will say: 'Our Lord, You sent messengers to us, and we obeyed them by Your leave; then You appointed successors over us, and we obeyed them by Your leave; then You appointed rulers over us, and we obeyed them by Your leave.' Then the Lord will say: 'You have spoken the truth. Its burden is upon them and you are free of it.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Zibriq, whom Abu Hatim declared thiqah (trustworthy) and al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) declared da'if (weak). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
