Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 7085

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man, in his will, set free six of his slaves, and he had no wealth other than them. News of this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he expressed anger; then he had lots cast and released one third of them.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Tawbah bin Numayr, and I have not found anyone who gave his biography. Its chain also contains Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, who has been declared both da'if (weak) and trustworthy; the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
