Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever deliberately attributes a lie to me should make his abode between the two eyes of Hell." This weighed heavily on his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions. They said: "O Messenger of Allah! When we narrate a hadith, we add to it and leave things out." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not mean you. I only mean the one who attributes a lie to me, seeking by narrating it to disgrace Islam." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: between the two eyes of Hell. Does Hell have two eyes?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! Have you not heard Allah Almighty saying: 'When it sees them from a distant place'?" (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "So it can only see them with eyes."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, al-Ahwas bin Hakim, whom al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and others declared da'if (weak), while al-Ijli, and Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan in one report, declared him thiqah (trustworthy). It was narrated from al-Ahwas by Muhammad bin al-Fadl bin Atiyyah, who is a weak narrator.
