It is narrated about Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to say: "What holds me back from narrating hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not that I am not among the best of his Companions in preserving his words; but I bear witness that I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever attributes to me something that I did not say, let him prepare to take his seat in Hell.'" In one narration it is reported from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him); he narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever attributes a lie to me, let him prepare to take up a house in Hell."
Imam Ahmad, Imam Abu Ya'la and Imam al-Bazzar recorded both these narrations. In a narration of Imam al-Bazzar the words are: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever deliberately attributes a lie to me, let him prepare to take his particular seat in Hell." Imam Abu Ya'la also recorded it in the same way. This is a hadith whose narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. The first chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad; he is da'if (weak), although he has also been declared trustworthy.
