❖ Introduction: Dealing Gently in Debt Recovery
Islam encourages mercy and leniency when dealing with debtors—especially those in financial difficulty. If one is unable to repay, it is praiseworthy to grant them time or even forgive the debt altogether. This is not only a moral duty but a source of great reward in the Hereafter.
◈ 1. Qur’anic Command for Leniency and Forgiveness
“And if the debtor is in hardship, then grant him time until ease. But if you remit it as charity, that is better for you—if you only knew.”
📖 [Al-Baqarah: 280]
◈ 2. Hadith: Angels Pardoned a Man for His Kindness in Debt Collection
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“An angel was sent to seize the soul of a man from previous nations. He was asked: ‘Did you do any good deeds?’ He replied:
‘I used to instruct my servants to give respite to the rich and forgive the poor.’
So the angels also forgave him and did not punish him.”

◈ 3. Immense Reward for Leniency or Forgiveness
➊ Hadith: Under Allah’s Shade on the Day of Judgment
❝مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا أَوْ وَضَعَ عَنْهُ، أَظَلَّهُ اللَّهُ فِي ظِلِّهِ❞
“Whoever grants respite to a debtor in hardship or forgives the debt, Allah will shade him under His throne on the Day of Judgement.”

“Whoever gives respite to a debtor in hardship or forgives him, Allah will shade him under His Throne on the Day of Judgment.”
