❖ Payment of Sadaqat al-Fitr: Rulings and Timing ❖
✦ Written by: Imran Ayub Lahori
✿ Who Is Obligated to Pay Sadaqat al-Fitr?
Sadaqat al-Fitr is obligatory upon a person who is responsible for others — such as:
➤ The owner of a slave
➤ The guardian of a minor or anyone under care
It must be paid on behalf of each individual under one’s responsibility.
✿ Timing for Paying Sadaqat al-Fitr
It is required to be paid before the Eid prayer.
✔ ① Hadith of Ibn ʿUmar
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Zakāt al-Fiṭr obligatory upon every Muslim — slave or free, male or female, young or old — as one ṣāʿ of dates or one ṣāʿ of barley. And he instructed that it be paid before the people go out for the prayer.”
[Bukhārī: 1503, Kitāb al-Zakāh: Bāb Farḍ Ṣadaqat al-Fiṭr, Muslim: 984]
✔ ② Hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما
فمن أداها قبل الصلاة فهي زكاة مقبولة ومن أداها بعد الصلاة فهي صدقة من صدقات
“Whoever gives it before the (Eid) prayer, it is an accepted Zakāh. And whoever gives it after the prayer, it is (merely) one of the general charities.”
[Ḥasan: Irwā’ al-Ghalīl: 843, 3/332; Abū Dāwūd: 1609, Kitāb al-Zakāh: Bāb Zakāt al-Fiṭr; Ibn Mājah: 1827; Dāraquṭnī: 2/138; Ḥākim: 1/409]
✿ Key Ruling Derived:
✔ It is essential to pay Sadaqat al-Fitr before leaving for the Eid prayer.
✔ There is no harm if it is paid a day or two before Eid.
[Al-Mughnī: 4/300, Fatāwā Ibn Bāz (Urdu Trans.): 1/127]
✿ Difference of Opinion:
➤ Majority (Jumhūr):
They consider it recommended (mustaḥabb) to give it before the Eid prayer.
In their view, it is acceptable until the end of Eid day.
➤ Imām al-Shawkānī:
He disagrees and considers this view invalid, citing the explicit wording of the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās as proof.
[Nayl al-Awṭār: 3/149]
✔ Conclusion:
The stronger and clearer position, based on hadith, is that Sadaqat al-Fitr must be paid before the Eid prayer begins.
Delaying it beyond that time nullifies it as Fitr, reducing it to a general charity.
