📘 Funeral Prayer for a Debtor in Islam
✍️ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
❖ Introduction: Ruling on Offering Janazah for a Debtor
If a Muslim passes away while still in debt, and the debt was not repaid during his lifetime, the funeral prayer (Ṣalāt al-Janāzah) will still be offered for him. His status as a believer entitles him to this fundamental Islamic right.
◈ The Responsibility of Debt After Death
In the event of an unpaid debt, it becomes the responsibility of the Islamic ruler (or state) to settle the deceased’s debt from Bayt al-Māl (the public treasury), ensuring that the rights of creditors are preserved.
◈ Prophetic Statement
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
❝وَمَنْ تَرَكَ دَيْنًا أَوْ ضِيَاعًا فَلْيَأْتِنِي فَأَنَا مَوْلَاهُ❞
“Whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents (children), let them come to me, for I am their guardian.”
