Shar‘i Method of Offering Qada of ‘Asr with Maghrib

Question:
If someone deliberately misses the ‘Asr prayer, can he make it up (Qada) together with Maghrib?
Answer:
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba‘d!
- If a person deliberately leaves ‘Asr, it is a grave sin.
- However, if it was missed due to forgetfulness or sleep, and he arrives at the mosque during Maghrib congregation, then he may perform Qada of ‘Asr along with Maghrib in congregation.
◈ Importance of Order in Congregational Prayers
- In this case, both Imam and follower are offering Fard Salah, only with the difference of ‘Asr and Maghrib.
- The difference between ‘Asr and Maghrib is even less than that between Fard and Nafl.
- Since Fard can be performed behind Nafl and vice versa, then this case is even more valid.
◈ Example from the Sunnah
During the Battle of Ahzab, when both ‘Asr and Maghrib were missed and the time of ‘Isha had entered, the Prophet ﷺ prayed:
➊ First ‘Asr,
➋ Then Maghrib,
➌ Then ‘Isha.
This proves that missed prayers should be made up in their proper order.
◈ If Maghrib Must Be Prayed with ‘Isha Congregation
In case of necessity, Maghrib may be prayed with the ‘Isha congregation in one of the following ways:
① First method:
- The follower completes prayer with Imam’s Taslim.
- One rak‘ah extra will be added, just like a traveler praying behind a resident Imam.
② Second method:
- The follower does not end with Imam’s Taslim.
- Instead, he adds one rak‘ah afterwards, making three Fard and two Nafl.
③ Third method:
- If time allows, he may become Imam himself.
- Pray three rak‘ahs of Maghrib, end with Salam.
- The followers (intending ‘Isha) add one more rak‘ah to complete four.
④ Fourth method:
- He joins the congregation for ‘Isha, then later performs Maghrib separately.
- But this way, the sequence of prayers will not be maintained.
✅ Summary:
- If ‘Asr is missed, it should be offered before Maghrib to maintain order.
- Offering Qada of ‘Asr with Maghrib congregation is permissible in necessity.
- Different valid methods exist depending on the situation, but order remains preferable.
