Shar‘i Ruling on the Order of Prayers and the Case of Missed Maghrib
Source: Ahkam wa Masail – Kitab al-Salat, Vol.1, p.109
Question:
Is it necessary to maintain the order of prayers? If order is necessary, then what should be done if a person misses Maghrib prayer and finds that the ‘Isha congregation has already begun in the mosque? Please explain with evidence.
Answer:
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba‘d!
◈ Importance of Order in Prayers
- The five daily prayers are naturally performed in their order, and it is well known and accepted that any missed prayer should be made up in the same manner as the original, unless there is a specific Shar‘i exemption.
- Evidence: During the Battle of Khandaq, several prayers were missed by the Prophet ﷺ. When he later performed them, he did so in sequence (tartib).
➝ This proves that maintaining order in prayers is a Prophetic Sunnah and should be followed.
◈ Case of Missed Maghrib with ‘Isha Congregation
If someone has missed Maghrib and enters the mosque while the ‘Isha congregation is in progress:
- He should join the congregation.
- His first three rak‘ahs will count as Maghrib (Fard).
- The fourth rak‘ah will be considered Nafl for him.
- If he is not satisfied with this arrangement, he may add one rak‘ah after the Imam’s Taslim.
- Thus, his three rak‘ahs will complete Maghrib, and the remaining two will count as Nafl.
✅ Summary:
- Maintaining the order of prayers is Sunnah and proven from the practice of the Prophet ﷺ.
- In the case of missing Maghrib and finding ‘Isha congregation ongoing, one may join the Imam, and either count the first three rak‘ahs as Maghrib with the last as Nafl, or add one rak‘ah afterward for Maghrib completion.
