✦ The Instruction to ʿUmar and ʿAlī Regarding Seeking Duʿāʾ from Uways al-Qaranī ✦

❖ The Question
Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instruct ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه to request duʿāʾ from Uways al-Qaranī رحمه الله? If so, then at that time, were there not many great Companions present from whom duʿāʾ could have been requested instead?
❖ The Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
Concerning Uways al-Qaranī رحمه الله, there is a narration in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim:
{عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ سوال أَنَّ رَسُوْلَ اﷲِ صلی الله علیہ وسلم قَالَ: إِنَّ رَجُلاً یَّاتِیْکُمْ مِنَ الْیَمَنِ یُقَالُ لَہُ أُوَیْسٌ لاَ یَدَعُ بِالْیَمَنِ غَیْرَ أُمٍّ لَّہُ قَدْ كَانَ بِہِ بَیَاضٌ فَدَعَا اﷲَ فَأَذْہَبَہُ إِلاَّ مَوْضِعَ الدِّیْنَارِ أَوِ الدِّرْهَمِ فَمَنْ لَقِیَہُ مِنْكُمْ فَلْیَسْتَغْفِرْ لَہُ}
[ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A man will come to you from Yemen whose name is Uways. He will leave behind in Yemen none except his mother. He once had a skin disease (leprosy) and he supplicated to Allah, Who removed it, except for a spot the size of a dirham or a dinar. Whoever among you meets him, let him ask him to seek forgiveness for him.”]
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Faḍāʾil, Bāb min Faḍāʾil Uways al-Qaranī)
❖ Conclusion
Yes, it is authentically reported in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim that the Prophet ﷺ advised whoever meets Uways al-Qaranī رحمه الله — including ʿUmar رضي الله عنه — to request him to supplicate for forgiveness. This was not because Uways was superior to the eminent Companions, but due to his special status in the sight of Allah for his devotion, righteousness, and dutifulness to his mother.
