❖ Question

What is the Islamic ruling and correct method regarding preparing and eating food at the time of someone’s death?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

The sharʿī ruling on this matter is derived from the following ḥadīth:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Prepare food for the family of Jaʿfar, for something has occurred to them which has preoccupied them.”
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Kitāb al-Janāʾiz, Bāb Ṣunʿat al-Ṭaʿām li-Ahl al-Mayyit; Sunan al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Janāʾiz, Bāb fī al-Ṭaʿām Yuṣnaʿ li-Ahl al-Mayyit)

❖ Ruling Derived from the Ḥadīth

✿ It is Sunnah to prepare food for the family of the deceased, not to expect food from them.

✿ The correct method is that others—relatives, neighbors, or community members—should prepare or purchase food and provide it to the family of the deceased.

✿ The wisdom behind this is to spare the grieving family from the hardship of cooking or arranging meals during their time of sorrow and preoccupation.
