A man who sings and makes singing a profession, people come to him for it and he goes to them for it, and he is known and famous for it, or a woman who does so

قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ: لَا تَجُوزُ شَهَادَةُ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّهُ مِنَ اللهْوِ الْمَكْرُوهِ الَّذِي يُشْبِهُ الْبَاطِلَ، فَإِنَّ مَنْ صَنَعَ هَذَا كَانَ مَنْسُوبًا إِلَى السَّفَهِ وَسَقَاطَةِ الْمُرُوءَةِ، وَمَنْ رَضِيَ هَذَا لِنَفْسِهِ كَانَ مُسْتَخِفًّا، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مُحَرَّمًا بَيِّنَ التَّحْرِيمِ..
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The testimony of neither of them is admissible, and that is because it is part of the disliked idle amusement (lahw) that resembles falsehood; for whoever does this is regarded as foolish and lacking in decency (muru'ah), and whoever accepts this for himself holds (his honour) lightly, even if it is not clearly forbidden."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا بَكَّارُ بْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ الْقَاضِي، ثنا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عِيسَى الْقَاضِي، ثنا حُمَيْدٌ الْخَرَّاطُ، عَنْ عَمَّارٍ الدُّهْنِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الصَّهْبَاءِ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ: {وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللهِ} [لقمان: ٦] قَالَ: " هُوَ وَاللهِ الْغِنَاءُ ".
Abu al-Sahba' narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "And among the people is he who buys idle talk to lead (people) astray from the path of Allah" [Surah Luqman: 6], that he said: By Allah, what is meant by it is singing.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أنبأ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي الدُّنْيَا، ثنا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ثنا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: {وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ} [لقمان: ٦] قَالَ: " هُوَ الْغِنَاءُ وَأَشْبَاهُهُ ". وَرُوِّينَاهُ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ وَعِكْرِمَةَ، وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ النَّخَعِيِّ.
Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "And among the people is he who buys idle talk" [Surah Luqman: 6], that what is meant by it is singing and things resembling it.
أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بِشْرَانَ، أنبأ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي الدُّنْيَا، ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: {وَأَنْتُمْ سَامِدُونَ} [النجم: ٦١] قَالَ: " هُوَ الْغِنَاءُ بِالْحِمْيَرِيَّةِ، اسْمَدِي لَنَا، تَغَنَّيْ لَنَا ".
Ikrimah narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning "while you amuse yourselves (samidun)" [Surah al-Najm: 61]; he said: What is meant by it is singing.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أنبأ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي الدُّنْيَا، ثنا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، وَعُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، قَالَا: ثنا غُنْدَرٌ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ حَمَّادٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ: " الْغِنَاءُ يُنْبِتُ النِّفَاقَ فِي الْقَلْبِ ".
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Singing makes hypocrisy grow in the heart.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أنبأ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي الدُّنْيَا، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْجَعْدِ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ الْمُرَادِيِّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ: " الْغِنَاءُ يُنْبِتُ النِّفَاقَ فِي الْقَلْبِ كَمَا يُنْبِتُ الْمَاءُ الزَّرْعَ، وَالذِّكْرُ يُنْبِتُ الْإِيمَانَ فِي الْقَلْبِ كَمَا يُنْبِتُ الْمَاءُ الزَّرْعَ ".
Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "Singing makes hypocrisy grow in the heart just as water makes crops grow, and remembrance (dhikr) makes faith grow in the heart just as water makes crops grow."
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أنبأ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي الدُّنْيَا، حَدَّثَنِي ⦗٣٧٨⦘ عِصْمَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، ثنا حَرَمِيُّ بْنُ عُمَارَةَ، ثنا سَلَّامُ بْنُ مِسْكِينٍ، ثنا شَيْخٌ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " الْغِنَاءُ يُنْبِتُ النِّفَاقَ فِي الْقَلْبِ، كَمَا يُنْبِتُ الْمَاءُ الْبَقْلَ ".
Abu Wa'il narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Singing makes hypocrisy grow in the heart just as water makes herbs grow."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أنبأ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي الدُّنْيَا، ثنا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، ثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ الْمَاجِشُونِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ: مَرَّ ابْنُ عُمَرَ بِجَارِيَةٍ صَغِيرَةٍ تُغَنِّي، فَقَالَ: " لَوْ تَرَكَ الشَّيْطَانُ أَحَدًا تَرَكَ هَذِهِ "..
Abdullah bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed by a little girl who was singing, and he said: If Satan were to leave anyone alone, he would leave this one.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ الْأَصَمُّ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ، أنبأ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، أَنَّ بُكَيْرَ بْنَ الْأَشَجِّ، حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ أُمَّ عَلْقَمَةَ مَوْلَاةَ عَائِشَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ بَنَاتَ أَخِي عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا خُفِضْنَ فَأَلِمْنَ ذَلِكَ، فَقِيلَ لِعَائِشَةَ: يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، أَلَا نَدْعُو لَهُنَّ مِنْ يُلَهِّيهِنَّ؟ قَالَتْ: " بَلَى، قَالَتْ: فَأُرْسِلَ إِلَى فُلَانٍ الْمُغَنِّي فَأَتَاهُمْ، فَمَرَّتْ بِهِ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا فِي الْبَيْتِ، فَرَأَتْهُ يَتَغَنَّى، وَيُحَرِّكُ رَأْسَهُ طَرَبًا، وَكَانَ ذَا شَعْرٍ كَثِيرٍ، فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا: " أُفٍّ، شَيْطَانٌ أَخْرِجُوهُ، أَخْرِجُوهُ "، فَأَخْرَجُوهُ.
Umm Alqamah, the freed slave-woman of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), says that the daughters of Aishah's brother were circumcised and were in pain from it. It was said to Aishah: O Mother of the Believers, shall we not call someone to amuse them? She said: Of course. So someone was sent for so-and-so, the singer, and he came to them. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed by him in the house and saw him singing and swaying his head in delight, and he had a great deal of hair. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Ugh! A devil! Get him out, get him out. So they got him out.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أنبأ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي الدُّنْيَا، ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، وَأَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ قَالَا: ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: سَأَلَ إِنْسَانٌ الْقَاسِمَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْغِنَاءِ، فَقَالَ: " أَنْهَاكَ عَنْهُ، وَأَكْرَهُهُ "، قَالَ: أَحَرَامٌ هُوَ؟ قَالَ: " انْظُرْ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي، إِذَا مَيَّزَ اللهُ الْحَقَّ مِنَ الْبَاطِلِ، فِي أَيِّهِمَا يُجْعَلُ الْغِنَاءُ؟ ".
Ubaydullah bin Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man asked al-Qasim bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) about singing, and he said: I forbid you from it and I dislike it. The man said: Is it forbidden? He said: O son of my brother, when Allah Almighty distinguishes truth from falsehood, in which pan of the scale will He place singing?
