Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Dawud (peace be upon him) was commanded to judge, and he became anxious. Allah Almighty revealed to him: "Ask them for an oath by My name and for proofs." He said: That is the "decisive speech" [Surah Sad: 20].

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man swearing by his father, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not swear by your fathers. Whoever swears, let him swear truthfully; whoever is given an oath by Allah, let him be content; and whoever is given an oath by Allah and is not content, he has nothing to do with Allah."

Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Two men brought a dispute to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). One of them was weak in his arguments and could not make his case clear. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled in favour of the other, so the one with the weak argument said: Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs. He (peace and blessings be upon him), moving his hand two or three times, said: "'Hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal-wakil' (Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs). Seek your right until you are unable; when you are unable, then say: 'Hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal-wakil' (Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs), for judgment between you is made on the basis of your arguments."
This is munqati' (its chain is broken).

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) judged between two men. The one against whom the judgment was given said: "Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah blames for helplessness, but you should adopt prudence; then when a matter overwhelms you, say: 'Hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal-wakil' (Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs)."
