Thabit said: I heard Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) saying to some of his family: Do you know such-and-such a woman? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by her while she was weeping beside a grave. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fear Allah and be patient." She said: Leave me alone; a calamity like mine has not befallen you. It was said to the woman: That was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Something like death seized her, and she went to his door. Finding no doorkeepers, she went in and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I did not recognise you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lady! Patience is at the first shock."

Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that his doors were not shut, no doorkeeper sat at them, and morning and evening meals were not brought before him in large platters. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was openly accessible; whoever wished could meet him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would sit on the ground, his food (peace and blessings be upon him) would be placed on the ground, he (peace and blessings be upon him) wore coarse clothing, rode a donkey, seated someone behind him, and, by Allah, he would lick his hand.

Al-Qasim bin Mukhaymirah narrates from a man of Palestine whose kunyah was Abu Maryam, of the tribe of Asad, that he came to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). He asked: What has brought you? He said: A hadith that I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); when I saw your position, I came to tell you. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Whomever Allah places in charge of any of the affairs of the people, and he screens himself off from their needs, their wants and their poverty, Allah Almighty will screen Himself off from his need, his want and his poverty on the Day of Resurrection."
