Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When we came to Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw fires burning. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What are these fires?" The Companions said: The meat of domestic donkeys is being cooked. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Break the pots and pour out the meat." The narrator says: A man from among the people said: Shall we pour it out and wash the pots? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, wash them."

Amr bin Dinar says: I said to Jabir bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him): They claim that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade eating the meat of domestic donkeys at the time of Khaybar." He said: Al-Hakam bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say the same from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) rejected that and recited this verse: "Say: I do not find, in what has been revealed to me, anything forbidden" [Surah al-An'am: 145]. The people of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) used to abandon certain things out of disgust, so Allah, Lord of Might, made the lawful and the unlawful completely clear. What Allah has made lawful is lawful, what He has made unlawful is unlawful, and what has been passed over in silence is pardoned. Then he recited this verse: "Say: I do not find, in what has been revealed to me, anything forbidden to one who would eat it, unless it be carrion, or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine" [Surah al-An'am: 145].
Had Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) known that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had declared it definitively unlawful, he would not have turned to anything else; but he did not know it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I do not know whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it because the people used it for riding, lest their mounts be used up, or whether on the day of Khaybar he declared the meat of the domestic donkey unlawful.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) says: During the days of Khaybar we were struck by severe hunger, and we came upon domestic donkeys, which we slaughtered. When the pots were boiling, the caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) announced: "Overturn the pots, and do not eat the meat of the donkeys." The narrator says: Some people said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it because the one-fifth (khumus) had not been taken from it; and others said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it for good.

Al-Shaybani narrated from Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: On the day of Khaybar we were struck by severe hunger. He then mentioned the hadith. Al-Shaybani says: I met Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) and mentioned this to him. He said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "declared it unlawful for good, because it used to eat filth."
A group of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) knew that his (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibition of it was one of outright prohibition (tahrim).

It is narrated similarly (through another chain), except that it says "from Abu Idris al-Khawlani," and uses the word for meat in the plural (luhum) in both places.

Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that three men came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), one after another, and said that the donkeys would be finished off by being eaten. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) had it announced: "Allah and His Messenger forbid you from eating the meat of domestic donkeys, for it is impure." Then the pots were overturned while they were boiling.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الضحايا / 19465
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Khaybar, we came upon donkeys outside the town, which we slaughtered and began to cook. Then the caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) announced: "Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid you from eating the meat of donkeys, for it is filth from the work of Satan." So the pots, boiling with the meat, were overturned.

Sayyiduna al-Miqdam (may Allah be pleased with him) says that on the day of Khaybar the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared certain things unlawful, among them the domestic donkey. The narrator says that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon a man, reclining on his couch while narrating my hadith, will say: The Book of Allah is sufficient for us; whatever we find in it lawful or unlawful, that is final. Beware! What the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has declared unlawful is like what Allah has declared unlawful."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الضحايا / 19468
Sayyiduna al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib al-Kindi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been given the Qur'an and the like of it. Soon a man with a full stomach, reclining on his couch, will say: Between us and you the Book of Allah is sufficient; whatever is lawful in it we will consider lawful, and whatever is unlawful in it we will consider unlawful. But the matter is not like that. Beware! Beasts of prey with fangs and domestic donkeys are not lawful to eat. The lost property of a person under covenant (mu'ahid) is not lawful, unless he has no need of it. And whoever seeks hospitality but is not hosted may take something equal to his hospitality."

Majza'ah bin Zahir (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (Zahir (may Allah be pleased with him)), who had pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) under the tree, that he fell ill and was told to use she-donkeys' milk and broth; but he disliked that.

Sayyiduna Ghalib bin Abjar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were struck by a year of famine, and I had nothing with which to feed my family except donkeys, while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden the meat of domestic donkeys. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: In this time of famine I have nothing with which to feed my family except donkeys, whereas you (peace and blessings be upon him) have forbidden eating the meat of domestic donkeys. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Feed your family the meat of your donkeys; I only declared them unlawful because of the donkeys that roam about the town (eating filth)."
There is disagreement about the chain of this hadith, and the like of it cannot be set against the authentic hadiths, already mentioned, which explicitly declare the meat of domestic donkeys unlawful.
