Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We startled a rabbit at a place called Marr al-Zahran; the people tried (to catch it) and became exhausted. I caught the rabbit and brought it to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) slaughtered the rabbit and sent its haunch and thigh to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: It was its thigh, I have no doubt about it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted it. I asked: "Did he (peace and blessings be upon him) also eat from it?" The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) also ate from it. Then later he said: He accepted it.

Ibn al-Hawtakiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the hare. He said: Were it not that I dislike adding anything to this hadith or leaving anything out of it, I would have narrated it to you; but I will send for someone who witnessed it. So he sent (a message) to Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he should narrate the hadith of the hare to them. Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A Bedouin gave a roasted hare to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as a gift. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to eat it and did not eat it himself, and one man also did not eat. When he was asked, he said: I am fasting. He was asked: Which fast are you keeping? He said: I fast three days of every month. The narrator says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not fast the White Days (Ayyam al-Bid)?" A Bedouin said: I saw blood with the hare. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no harm."
