Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, says: "Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find written with them in the Torah and the Gospel, who commands them what is right and forbids them what is wrong, and makes lawful for them the good things and forbids them the impure things." [Surah al-A'raf: 157]
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The good and the impure things are determined only by those who used to eat them, and they are the Arabs, who asked about this and concerning whom the rulings were revealed."
He (further) said: "I heard some of the people of knowledge say concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: 'Say: I do not find, in what has been revealed to me, anything forbidden to one who would eat it' [Surah al-An'am: 145] that it means: of what you used to eat, except that it be carrion, and the things mentioned after it."
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "By inference from the Sunnah, this is the most fitting of its meanings."

He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The snake, the scorpion, the mouse; he may drive the crow away by throwing at it but not kill it; the rabid dog, the kite, and the aggressive beast of prey."
We have narrated in (the Book of) Hajj the hadith of Ibn al-Musayyib from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about killing the snake and the wolf, and the hadith of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas and others about killing the gecko.

Abd al-Muhaymin bin Abbas is alone in narrating it, and he is da'if (weak); the hadith of Ubaydullah bin Abdullah from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is the strongest that has come in this chapter.

Both of these are munqati' (with a broken chain). Hamzah al-Nasibi narrated a musnad (connected) hadith on this, but he was accused of fabrication.

Al-Qasim bin Muhammad narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "When Bayt al-Maqdis was burned, the geckos were blowing on (the fire) with their mouths, and the bat was putting it out with its wings."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الضحايا / 19381
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Do not kill frogs, for their croaking is glorification (of Allah); and do not kill the bat, for when Bayt al-Maqdis was destroyed it said: 'O my Lord, give me power over the sea so that I may drown them.'" These two reports concerning the bat are mawquf (stopping at the Companions), and their chains are sahih (authentic). So whatever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered to be killed outside the sanctuary and inside it is unlawful to eat, because if it were lawful, he would not have ordered it to be killed in the sanctuary or in the state of ihram, when Allah Almighty has forbidden killing game in ihram. And whatever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade killing is also unlawful to eat, because if it were lawful, he would have ordered it to be slaughtered and would not have forbidden killing it, just as he did not forbid killing what is lawful to slaughter and eat. And Allah knows best.
