Sayyiduna Nubayshah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man called out to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): In the Jahiliyyah we used to slaughter animals in the month of Rajab; what do you (peace and blessings be upon him) command us concerning it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Slaughter for Allah in whichever month you wish, feed people, and attain righteousness." The man said: In the Jahiliyyah we used to slaughter the fara'; what do you (peace and blessings be upon him) command us concerning it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In every grazing flock there is a fara'. Feed it from your livestock, and when it becomes a full-grown camel, slaughter it and give its meat in charity." Khalid said: I think it is to be given in charity to travellers; this is better.

Zayd bin Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from a man, who narrates from his father or his uncle (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: I was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Arafat. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the aqiqah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not like 'uquq. Whoever has a child born to him and wishes to slaughter an animal, let him do so." He (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the atirah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a right." He (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the fara', and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is valid, but it should not be slaughtered right at the start; rather, keep it among your wealth until it becomes a full-grown camel and then slaughter it. That is better than overturning your vessel, leaving your she-camel bereaved, and slaughtering it while its flesh is mixed with its hair."
(b) Abd al-Jabbar bin al-Ala' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him): Let that young one drink its mother's milk until it is two or three years old.

Al-Muzani said that Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: To bring blessing to their wealth, the people of the Jahiliyyah used to slaughter the young of their she-camel or goat without letting it be nursed. When they asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish to slaughter, then do so." They asked because they used to do this in the Jahiliyyah, fearing that Islam might regard it as disliked; so he (peace and blessings be upon him) told them that it is not forbidden, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed them that the young animal should be fed and then be used as a mount in the path of Allah.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Zayd bin Aslam narrates from a man of Banu Damrah, who narrates from his father, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the fara', and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The fara' is a right. Feed that young one until it becomes a full-grown camel of two or three years, then give it to a widow or use it as a mount in the path of Allah. This is better than overturning your vessels, snatching the young from your she-camel, and its flesh sticking to its hair."
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The fara' is a right" means that it is not falsehood. And as for what he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "There is no fara' and no atirah," its purpose is that they are not obligatory, because the other hadith indicates this meaning: that he (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted giving it to a widow or using it as a mount in the path of Allah. And his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying about the atirah, "You may slaughter in whichever month you wish," is because it is slaughtered for Allah; one does not slaughter in the name of anyone else.

Ali bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Abu Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Fara' is the first young of a she-camel, which they used to slaughter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked this and said: "Leave it until it becomes a full-grown camel of two or three years, so that it becomes fit to eat." Zukhrubb is an animal whose body has grown stout and whose flesh has become firm. "(It is) better than overturning your vessel": when you slaughter the she-camel's young, the she-camel is left without her young and her milk dries up. "You make your she-camel bereaved" means slaughtering her young; any female that loses her young is called walih.
