Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a horned ram with black legs, a black belly and black around its eyes, and it was brought to him to be sacrificed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aishah, bring the knife and sharpen it on a stone." I did so. Then he took it, took hold of the ram, laid it down and began to slaughter it, and said: 'Bismillah, Allahumma taqabbal min Muhammadin wa ali Muhammadin wa min ummati Muhammad' (In the name of Allah; O Allah, accept from Muhammad, the family of Muhammad and the Ummah of Muhammad). Then he sacrificed it.

"This is on behalf of me and on behalf of those of my Ummah who have not sacrificed."

Abu Ayyash narrates from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): On the day of sacrifice the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered two horned, black-and-white, castrated rams. When he turned them (towards the qiblah), he said: "'I have turned my face towards the One who created the heavens and the earth' [Surah al-An'am: 79], upon the religion of Ibrahim, inclining to truth, and I am not of the polytheists. 'Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. He has no partner, and with this I have been commanded' [Surah al-An'am: 162-163], and I am of the Muslims. 'Allahumma minka wa laka 'an Muhammadin wa ummatihi' (O Allah, it is from You and for You, on behalf of Muhammad and his Ummah). 'Bismillah wallahu akbar' (In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered.
(b) In the narration of al-Wahbi: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered two rams on the day of Eid. When he turned them (towards the qiblah), he recited the supplication, then said: 'Allahumma minka wa laka 'an Muhammadin wa ummatihi' (O Allah, it is from You and for You, on behalf of Muhammad and his Ummah), and he mentioned the name of Allah and slaughtered.
(c) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It has been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), through a route whose like is not established, that he sacrificed two rams, saying over one of them, after mentioning Allah: 'O Allah, on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad', and over the other: 'O Allah, on behalf of Muhammad and the Ummah of Muhammad'.

Sayyidah Aishah or Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to sacrifice two horned, castrated rams. He would begin with one of them, saying: 'Bismillah wallahu akbar' (In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest), "O Allah, it is from You and for You, on behalf of Muhammad and his Ummah, those who bore witness to You of Your Oneness and bore witness to me of conveying (the message)." And he would slaughter the other, saying: 'Bismillah wallahu akbar' (In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest), "O Allah, it is from You and for You, on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad."
(b) In the narration of Ibn Abdan: Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed, he would buy two fat, horned, black-and-white, castrated rams. He would slaughter one of them on behalf of his Ummah, those who bore witness to Allah's Oneness and bore witness to his conveying (the message), and the other on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

Abu Zabyan narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): I asked him about the saying of Allah Almighty: "And the sacrificial camels We have made for you among the symbols of Allah; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah over them when they are lined up (standing)" [Surah al-Hajj: 36]. He said: When you intend to slaughter the camel, make it stand, then say: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahumma minka wa laka' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; O Allah, it is from You and for You), then mention the name of Allah, then slaughter it. I asked: Do I say that for the sacrifice (udhiyah) as well? He said: And for the sacrifice too.

Asim bin Sharib said: On the day of sacrifice a ram was brought to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and he slaughtered it, saying: 'Bismillah, Allahumma minka wa laka wa min Muhammadin laka' (In the name of Allah; O Allah, it is from You and for You, and from Muhammad to You). Then he gave an order concerning it, and it was given in charity. Then another ram was brought, and he slaughtered it, saying: 'Bismillah, Allahumma minka wa laka wa min Aliyyin laka' (In the name of Allah; O Allah, it is from You and for You, and from Ali to You). Then he said: Bring me a portion of it, and give the rest in charity.

Hanash bin al-Harith said: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) used to sacrifice one ram on behalf of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and one ram on his own behalf. We said: O Commander of the Believers, do you sacrifice on behalf of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to sacrifice on his behalf for ever, so I sacrifice on his behalf for ever."
Sharik bin Abdullah alone narrated it with this chain. If it is established, it indicates the permissibility of sacrificing on behalf of Muslims who have departed this world. As for sacrificing on behalf of an unborn child, al-Shafi'i said: No sacrifice is made on behalf of what is in the womb.
