Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "We hope, or we fear, that we will meet the enemy, and we have no knives with us; may we slaughter with a reed?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever makes the blood flow and the name of Allah has been mentioned over it, eat it, but do not slaughter with a tooth or a nail."

Ibn Ka'b bin Malik informed Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), narrating from his father, Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), that a slave girl of theirs used to graze goats on Mount Sal'. When she saw one of the goats dying, she broke a stone and slaughtered it with it. He said to his family: "Do not eat it until I have asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So he sent someone to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask, and he said: "O Prophet of Allah! A slave girl of ours was grazing goats on Mount Sal', and when she saw one of the goats dying, she broke a stone and slaughtered it." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that the goat be eaten.

Ata bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from a man of Banu Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was grazing she-camels on one of the hills of Uhud. He saw one of the she-camels dying and found nothing with which to perform nahr, so he took a wooden peg and struck it into the she-camel's labbah, so that the blood flowed. Then he came and told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that it be eaten.

Ata bin Yasar narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man of the Ansar had a she-camel near Mount Uhud; it began to die, so he performed nahr on it with a wooden peg. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about eating it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) "gave permission to eat it."

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was asked about slaughtering with a piece of wood, and he said: Everything that cuts the veins and makes the blood flow, but not something that does not make the blood flow.
And Abu Ubayd says: Tathrid means an animal that is slaughtered with something that does not make the blood flow; "ma afra al-awdaj" means "something that cuts the veins and makes the blood flow." Abu Ubayd says: Some people say its meaning is "eat," but this is not correct; rather, its meaning is that whatever cuts the veins, wood or stone, will be counted as a valid slaughter.
