Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyidah Umm Haram bint Milhan (may Allah be pleased with her) for food, and Sayyidah Umm Haram (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him). One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her, and after feeding him she sat down to pick lice from his head. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slept and, when he woke up, he was smiling. She said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what has made you laugh?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People of my Ummah were shown to me, fighting in the way of Allah. They ride in the middle of the sea like kings on thrones." The narrator said that Sayyidah Umm Haram (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), pray that I may be among them." He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for her. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) slept and, when he woke up, he was smiling. She said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what has made you laugh?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People of my Ummah were shown to me going out on campaign, as on the first occasion." She again asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to pray that she be counted among them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are among the first ones." In the time of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Umm Haram (may Allah be pleased with her) travelled by sea, and when she came out of the sea she fell from her mount and passed away.

Umm Haram bint Milhan (may Allah be pleased with her) said: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was taking a midday rest in my house, and when he woke up he was smiling. I asked: What has made you smile? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People of my Ummah were shown to me riding upon the sea like kings seated on thrones." I said: Pray that Allah includes me among them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed and lay down again. Then, after waking up, he said the same, and I again asked him to pray, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are among the first ones." Then Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) married her and took her on a sea voyage. When they were returning, her neck broke from a fall from a mule, and this caused her death.

Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Atik of Banu Salimah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever leaves his house with the intention of jihad in the way of Allah." The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) joined his three fingers together and said: "Where are those who strive in the way of Allah? Whoever falls from his mount in the way of Allah and dies, his matter rests with Allah; and if he dies from being stung by something, he will receive the full reward; and whoever dies a natural death." The narrator said: This is a word I had not heard from any Arab before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), meaning the one who dies on his bed: "his reward too rests with Allah; and whoever is killed on the spot has made Paradise obligatory for himself."

Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever goes out for jihad in the way of Allah, seeking Allah's pleasure, affirming His promise and believing in His messengers, Allah, the Lord of Might, is the guarantor of this servant that, in whatever way He causes him to die in the army, He will admit him to Paradise. He remains in Allah's guarantee, even if his absence is long. Then Allah, the Lord of Might, will return him to his home safe and sound, with reward and spoils of war." The narrator said: "Whoever dies in the way of Allah, or is martyred, or is thrown by his horse or camel, or is stung by something venomous, or dies on his very bed, he is a martyr and Paradise is his."

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Allah is the guarantor of three people: a man who goes out for jihad, for Allah guarantees him that He will either cause him to die and admit him to Paradise or return him with reward or spoils; a man who goes to the mosque, for it is upon Allah to admit him to Paradise after his death, or to return him with reward or spoils; and a man who enters his house with a greeting of salam, Allah is his guarantor as well."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that he passed by Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), who was sitting in front of the door of his house making gestures with his hands, as though he were talking to himself. Abdullah said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, are you talking to yourself? He said: The enemy of Allah wants to make me heedless of words I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Abdullah said: You are now enduring the hardships of your days in your house; why do you not go out to the gathering and talk? Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever goes out for jihad in the way of Allah, Allah is his guarantor; whoever stays in his house without speaking ill of anyone, that is, without backbiting, Allah is his guarantor too; whoever visits the sick, or goes to the mosque in the morning or evening, Allah is their guarantor too; and whoever supports the imam, Allah is his guarantor too." The enemy of Allah wanted to draw me out of my house to the gathering.
