Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A letter from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us, (saying): When you besiege a fortress and they want you to bring them down on the judgement of Allah, do not do so, for you do not know what the judgement of Allah regarding them is; rather, bring them down on your own judgement, then decide regarding them as you wish. And when a man says to another man: 'Do not fear,' he has given him safety; and when he says the word 'matras,' he has given safety; and when he says the words 'la tadhal' (do not be alarmed), he has also given protection, for Allah Almighty knows the languages.
Al-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates it from al-A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him), and at the end of it is: Protection is also given with the words 'la tadhhal' (do not be alarmed), for Allah, the Lord of Might, knows the languages.

Jubayr bin Hayyah said that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent people from various cities to fight the polytheists. The narrator said: While Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was thus engaged, a polytheist man from the people of al-Ahwaz who had been taken captive was brought. When he was brought, some people said to al-Hurmuzan: Would you like not to be killed? He said: Yes, and how is that? They said: When they bring you near to the Commander of the Believers and he speaks to you, say: I am afraid to speak to you. He will say: 'La tafraq' (do not be afraid). Then if he wants to kill you, say: I am under safety, for you said 'la tafraq.' The man memorized this. Then when he was brought to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said to him during some of his questioning: I am afraid. So he said: 'La tafraq' (do not be afraid). When he finished speaking with him, he asked him whatever Allah willed, then said: I am going to kill you. He said: You have given me safety. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Woe to you! I did not give you safety. He said: You said 'la tafraq.' He said: He has spoken the truth; if not (to be killed), then accept Islam. He said: Yes. And he accepted Islam. Then the long hadith follows.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We besieged Tustar, and al-Hurmuzan came down on the judgement of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). I set off with him to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When we reached him, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Speak. He asked: Shall I speak the speech of a living man or the speech of a dead man? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Speak, there is no harm. He said: O community of Arabs, as long as Allah left (matters) between us and you, we used to dominate you, kill you and seize your wealth; then when Allah was with you, we had no power left. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What do you say? I said: O Commander of the Believers! I have left behind me a great many enemies and fierce strength; if you kill him, the people will despair of life and their resistance will become fiercer. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I spare the killer of al-Bara' bin Malik and Majza'ah bin Thawr (may Allah be pleased with them both)? When I feared that he would indeed kill him, I said: There is no way for you to kill him; you have already said to him: Speak, there is no harm. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have taken a bribe and received something from him. I said: By Allah! I have neither taken a bribe nor received anything from him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Either you bring me someone else to testify to this, or I will certainly punish you. He said: I went out and met Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him), and he testified along with me. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) held back, and al-Hurmuzan became a Muslim, and a stipend was fixed for him.
