Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, said concerning jihad: "There is no blame upon the weak, nor upon the sick, nor upon those who find nothing to spend, as long as they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger. There is no ground (of reproach) against the doers of good, and Allah Almighty is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful." [Surah al-Tawbah: 91]
To the end of the three verses.

Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When this verse was revealed: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home) and those who strive in the path of Allah" [Surah al-Nisa: 95], the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), and he wrote it down. Then Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) came and presented the excuse of his ailment and the like to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so Allah Almighty revealed the part: "other than those with a disability."

Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that he said: Tranquillity (sakinah) covered the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was at his (peace and blessings be upon him) side. The thigh of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell upon my thigh, and I never found anything heavier than the thigh of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then, when this state of his (peace and blessings be upon him) passed, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Write: 'Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), other than those with a disability, and those who strive in the path of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred those who strive with their wealth and their lives' [Surah al-Nisa: 95]," the whole verse. Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I wrote this verse on a shoulder blade. Then Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a blind man, stood up when he heard the superiority of the mujahidin over those who sit back, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what about a man who does not have the strength to wage jihad along with the believers?" Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) had not yet finished his words when tranquillity again covered the Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and his (peace and blessings be upon him) thigh came upon my thigh, and this time too I felt the same heaviness as I had felt the first time. Then this state of his (peace and blessings be upon him) passed, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Read." So I read: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Other than those with a disability." Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I joined this fragment to the verse, and this fragment was written on the strong bone of the shoulder blade.

Abu Nadrah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the saying of Allah Almighty: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), other than those with a disability" [Surah al-Nisa: 95]. He said: What is meant by it are the people of disability, that is, people who in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) could not take part in jihad with him (peace and blessings be upon him); pains and illnesses had kept them from going, while others did not go despite being healthy. So Allah Almighty declared the sick to be excused in comparison with them.

Some elders of Banu Salamah said: Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him) was severely lame. He had four young sons who would be with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in every campaign he went on. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to set out for Uhud, Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him) also wished to go, but his sons said to him: Allah Almighty has given you a concession; it is better for you to stay here, and we will suffice in your place; Allah has not made jihad obligatory on you. So Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, my sons are preventing me from going with you (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, I hope to be martyred and to walk in Paradise with this lameness of mine. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has exempted you from jihad." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his sons: "Why do you not let him go? Perhaps Allah Almighty will grant him martyrdom." He went out with him (peace and blessings be upon him) and was martyred on the day of Uhud.
