Some elders of Banu Salamah said: Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him) was severely lame. He had four young sons who would be with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in every campaign he went on. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to set out for Uhud, Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him) also wished to go, but his sons said to him: Allah Almighty has given you a concession; it is better for you to stay here, and we will suffice in your place; Allah has not made jihad obligatory on you. So Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, my sons are preventing me from going with you (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, I hope to be martyred and to walk in Paradise with this lameness of mine. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has exempted you from jihad." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his sons: "Why do you not let him go? Perhaps Allah Almighty will grant him martyrdom." He went out with him (peace and blessings be upon him) and was martyred on the day of Uhud.
