Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, the men take part in military campaigns while we do not take part, nor do we fight so that we may attain martyrdom, and likewise we receive half the share of inheritance compared to men? Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: On the day of Uhud I presented myself before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the fighting of Uhud. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not permit me, and at that time I was fourteen years old. Then on the day of the Trench (al-Khandaq) I presented myself when I was fifteen years old, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted me (to take part). Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I went to Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) during his caliphate and narrated this hadith to him, and he said: This is the dividing line between the minor and the adult. Then he wrote to his governors that whoever was fifteen years old should be included in the fighting, and whoever was younger than that should be placed among the dependants.

Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My mother brought me to Madinah, and people sent her proposals of marriage. She said: I will marry only a man who will take care of this orphan. So she married a man from the Ansar. Every year, when the boys of the Ansar were presented to him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would send to the army whoever among them he found capable. Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One year I was presented along with another boy; he (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted him and turned me back. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, you have accepted him and turned me back; if I throw him down, may I also go?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come, wrestle each other." Yazid bin Hurmuz (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Najdah wrote to Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), asking him about certain matters. Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: People say that Ibn Abbas corresponds with the Haruriyyah, and were it not that I fear concealing knowledge, I would never write to him. Najdah wrote to him: "Amma ba'd (To proceed)": Tell me, did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) take women with him on military campaigns, and did he (peace and blessings be upon him) assign them a share? Did he (peace and blessings be upon him) kill children? When does the orphanhood of an orphan come to an end? And tell me about the khumus (one-fifth): for whom is it? Then Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) wrote to him: You have asked me whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took women with him on campaigns. He said: Yes, women did take part in campaigns with him (peace and blessings be upon him), but they would dress the wounds of the injured and nurse the sick, and they would be given something from the spoils, but they had no fixed share. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not kill children, so you too must not kill them, unless you come to know about those children what Khidr (peace be upon him) knew, and likewise distinguish between the believer and the disbeliever, so that you kill the disbeliever and leave the believer. You have also written asking when the orphanhood of an orphan is complete and finished. Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: By my life! Sometimes a man's beard grows and he has no understanding of dealings; he is completely weak in this matter. Whoever attains the understanding that other people have, his orphanhood comes to an end. And you have asked me about the khumus: we used to say, it is for us, but our people refused us that (saying it is not yours), so we bore it patiently.
And in another narration: As for slaves and women, there was no fixed share for them when they were present in battle, but they would take something from the people's spoils.

Al-Harith bin Abdullah bin Abi Rabi'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on one of his military expeditions and passed by some people of Muzaynah. A slave belonging to a woman of that tribe followed him. When he met him on the way, he greeted him with salam. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you so-and-so?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell me, what is the matter?" He said: I want to wage jihad with you (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Has your mistress given you permission?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go back to her; your example is like that of a slave or servant who does not pray, if you die before reaching her. And convey my salam to her." The slave came to his mistress, conveyed his (peace and blessings be upon him) salam to her and related the whole incident. She said: I adjure you by Allah, did he (peace and blessings be upon him) command you to convey salam to me? The slave said: Yes. So the mistress said: Then go and wage jihad along with him (peace and blessings be upon him).
