Allah, exalted be His praise, says: "Fighting has been prescribed for you though it is hateful to you; and it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing while it is bad for you." [Surah al-Baqarah: 216]
Along with this, there are other verses of the Noble Qur'an in which the obligation of jihad is mentioned.

Sayyiduna Iyad bin Himar al-Mujashi'i (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in a sermon: "Listen! My Lord has commanded me to teach you what you do not know, from what He has taught me this day." Then he narrated the hadith and said that Allah Almighty said: "O Muhammad, I have sent you only to test you and to test (others) through you, and I have revealed to you a Book which water cannot wash away or erase; you will recite it while asleep and while awake." And (he said): Indeed, Allah Almighty has commanded me to burn Quraysh. I said: "O my Lord, then they will crush my head and leave it like a loaf of bread." And Allah Almighty said: "Drive them out as they drove you out. Fight them and We will support you; spend and We will spend on you; send an army and We will send five like it; and, together with those who obey you, fight those who disobey you."

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Yemen and said: "Perhaps you will pass by my grave and my mosque. I have sent you to a people whose hearts are very soft; they will fight you over the truth twice. So, together with those of them who obey you, fight those who disobey you. Then they will come towards Islam, until a wife will hasten ahead of her husband, a son ahead of his father and a brother ahead of his brother. And settle between the two tribes, al-Sakun and al-Sakasik."

Sayyiduna Ibn al-Khasasiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance to him on Islam, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) laid down the following conditions for me: "To bear witness that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger, to perform the five daily prayers, to fast in Ramadan, to pay zakah, to perform Hajj to the House of Allah, and to wage jihad in the path of Allah." Ibn al-Khasasiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, there are two of these which I do not have the strength to do, that is (zakah and jihad). As for zakah, I have only ten camels on which my family subsists, that is, we use their milk and ride them. As for jihad, people claim that whoever flees from the battlefield returns with the wrath of Allah, so I fear that when I am present on the battlefield I will dislike death, come to love my own life and become greedy for it. He said: The Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) closed his hand, then shook it and said: "No charity and no jihad; then how can you enter Paradise?" Ibn al-Khasasiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I said: O Messenger of Allah, I pledge allegiance to you. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took my pledge on all of these things.

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit me into Paradise. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, I will tell you which of these is the head, which is the pillar, and what is the peak of the hump." Then he said: "The head of these matters is Islam; whoever accepts Islam is safe. Their pillar is prayer, and the peak of the hump is jihad." Then he narrated the hadith.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wage jihad, that is, against the polytheists, with your wealth, your lives and your tongues."

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to jihad in the path of Allah, for it is one of the gates of Paradise, and through it Allah Almighty removes grief and sorrow." Others besides him added these words: "And strive in the path of Allah against the near and the far, establish the limits (hudud) of Allah upon the near and the far, and do not fear, in the religion of Allah, the blame of any blamer."

Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr narrates from his father, who said: We sat with Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) in Damascus; he was (sitting) on a chest, and he had nothing to spare beyond it. A man said to him: If you stayed back from the campaign this year, it would be better. He said: Al-Buhuth, that is, Surah al-Tawbah, has held us to it, meaning Surah al-Tawbah does not let us sit back, for Allah Almighty says: "Go forth in the path of Allah, light or heavy, whatever your state." [Surah al-Tawbah: 41] So I find myself light.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "Go forth, light or heavy" [Surah al-Tawbah: 41], and said: I see that our Lord has called upon both the old and the young to go forth in it. Then he said to his sons: O my sons, prepare me, prepare me. His sons said: You have indeed taken part in campaigns with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both); (now stay back) and we will fight. He said: Prepare me. Then he travelled by sea and died. (Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) They found an island only after seven days, so they buried him there, and his body remained completely unchanged.
