Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ibrahim (peace be upon him) circumcised himself at the age of 80 with an adze." Bukhari and Muslim recorded it in the Sahih from Qutaybah bin Sa'id. And Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has said: "Then We revealed to you: follow the religion of Ibrahim, the upright." [Surah al-Nahl: 123] And in the Book of Purification we have narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning: "And when his Lord tested Ibrahim with certain words, and he fulfilled them" [Surah al-Baqarah: 124], that he said: Allah tested him with (matters of) purification, five in the head and five in the body. The five of the head are: trimming the moustache, rinsing the mouth, sniffing water into the nose, using the tooth-stick (miswak) and parting the hair of the head. The five of the body are: clipping the nails, shaving the pubic hair, circumcision, plucking the armpit hair and washing the places of excrement and urine with water. Our companions said: Testing (ibtila') mostly occurs only with what is obligatory.
