Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that Ma'iz (may Allah be pleased with him) be stoned, and he himself was not present there; and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Unays (may Allah be pleased with him) to go to a woman, and if she confessed (to adultery), to stone her; and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say, 'Inform me so that I may be present (at the time of her stoning).'"

Sayyiduna Nu'aym bin Hazzal al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Ma'iz (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I have committed adultery, so judge me according to the Book of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him, until he had confessed four times; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and stone him." When the stones struck him, he ran because of the pain; then Abdullah bin Unays (may Allah be pleased with him) struck him with a donkey's shank-bone and knocked him down, and the people also pelted him until he died. When his running away was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not leave him? Perhaps he would have repented, and Allah would have accepted his repentance. O Hazzal, had you covered him with your garment, that would have been better for you than what you did."

Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) said that a man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in Syria and said that he had seen another man with his wife. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna Abu Waqid (may Allah be pleased with him) to his wife to verify it, and he came to his wife. There were women around her. Sayyiduna Abu Waqid (may Allah be pleased with him) told her the whole matter and said that she would not be punished on his word, and Sayyiduna Abu Waqid (may Allah be pleased with him) began prompting her to deny it, but she refused to deny it and confessed. So by the order of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) she was stoned.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said that when Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both) had a woman stoned, they did not say that they themselves would be present.
