Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Because the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), 'Take (this ruling) from me; Allah Almighty has appointed a way for them (the women who commit adultery),' is the first (ruling) that was revealed, by which (the punishment of) confinement and harm was abrogated for the man and woman who commit adultery. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stoned Sayyiduna Ma'iz (may Allah be pleased with him) and did not flog him, and ordered Sayyiduna Unays (may Allah be pleased with him) to go in the morning to the other man's wife and, if she confessed, to stone her, this indicates that (the punishment of) flogging was abrogated for the free, married man and woman who commit adultery, and that (the punishment of) stoning remained established for them both."

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Ma'iz was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he was a man with thick hair and a stocky, muscular body. He confessed to adultery, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him. Then, when he had confessed two or three times, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he be stoned, and said: "Whenever we set out on a military expedition, one of them stays behind, bleating like a billy-goat, giving one of the women a little milk. If Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, gives me power over any one of them, I will certainly make him an example (as a deterrent) in their regard."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Two men came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a dispute, and (one of them) said: Judge between us by the Book of Allah. The other said the same, and he was the more understanding of the two. He said: Permit me to speak. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Speak." He said: My son was working for this man, and he committed adultery with his wife. I was told that my son must be stoned, so I gave a hundred goats and one of my slave-girls as ransom for him. Then I asked the people of knowledge, and they said that my son must receive a hundred lashes and exile for one year, and that his wife must be stoned. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, I will judge between you according to the Book of Allah: your son must receive a hundred lashes and exile for one year; the goats and the slave-girl will be returned to you; and his wife is to be stoned." And he sent Sayyiduna Unays (may Allah be pleased with him), saying: "Go and ask this woman; if she confesses, stone her." She confessed, and she was stoned.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: "Stoning is in the Book of Allah for every married man and woman who commits adultery, when they either confess, or there is evidence, or pregnancy occurs."

Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Beware lest you perish by abandoning the verse of stoning, with someone saying, 'We do not find two prescribed punishments in the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) carried out stoning, and we carried out stoning. By the One in whose hand is my soul, were it not that people would say, 'Umar has added to the Book of Allah,' I would have written it: 'Al-shaykhu wal-shaykhatu idha zanaya farjumuhuma al-battata' (When the old man and the old woman commit adultery, stone them both outright), for we certainly recited it.

Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and I have carried out stoning. By Allah, had I not feared that I would be adding to the Book of Allah, I would have written it in the Mushaf; and I fear that peoples will come who will not find it in the Qur'an and so will not believe in it.
