Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A Muslim man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the mosque, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery." He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him. He came in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him) again and confessed again, and he confessed four times. When he had confessed four times, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Are you insane?" He said: No. He asked: "Are you married?" He said: Yes. So he said: "Take him and stone him."
Al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Someone who heard Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me that he was saying: I was among those who threw stones; when the stones struck him, he fled, and we caught up with him at al-Harrah and stoned him.

Sulayman bin Buraydah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that Ma'iz bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you! Go and repent to Allah." He said this three times, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the same reply three times. When he said it the fourth time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "From what shall I purify you?" He said: From adultery. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is he insane?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Has he drunk wine?" A man stood up and smelled his mouth, and he had not drunk wine. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are you married?" He said: Yes. So on his (peace and blessings be upon him) order he was stoned. The people split into two groups. One said: Ma'iz died upon an evil deed. The others said: There is no repentance like his, for he placed his hand in the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They were sitting when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pray for forgiveness for Ma'iz." The people prayed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has repented with such a repentance that, if it were divided among the whole Ummah, it would suffice them all." Then a woman from Ghamid came, and she too confessed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her the same reply as Ma'iz: "Go and repent." She said: Do you want to send me back as you sent back Ma'iz? He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is it?" She replied that she was pregnant from adultery. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are you married?" She said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We cannot stone you until you deliver." A man took responsibility for her. When she gave birth, that man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We cannot stone her yet; who will raise the child?" Then a man of the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and took on the responsibility of raising the child, and on his (peace and blessings be upon him) order she was stoned.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: A man and a woman from among the Jews committed adultery. They came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What ruling do you find in the Torah about this?" They said: That we disgrace them and flog them. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You are lying. Bring the Torah; in it is the ruling of stoning." They brought the Torah, and one man placed his hand on the verse of stoning and began reading what came before it and after it. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Lift your hand." When he lifted his hand, there was the verse of stoning. They said: "He has spoken the truth, O Muhammad; the verse of stoning is there." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered stoning, and they were stoned. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I saw the man bending over the woman to shield her from the stones.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that people passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a man who had been flogged and whose face had been blackened and who was being paraded about. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the Jews: "Who is your scholar?" They said: So-and-so. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent someone to him, and when he came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What do you find as the prescribed punishment for adultery in your Book?" He said: Stoning; but adultery spread among our nobles, so when a person of high standing committed adultery he was not stoned, and when a poor person committed adultery he was stoned. So in place of stoning we give the punishment of flogging and blackening the face. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he be stoned, and he was stoned, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, bear witness that I have revived one of their Sunnahs that had died."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him): We were with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) at al-Jabiyah when a man came and said: My wife has committed adultery with my slave, and she also confesses it. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me, as one of a group of ten men, to his wife, to go and ask her. We went, and his wife was a very young girl. We said to her: Your husband says this, and we have come to ask you; what do you say? She said: He is telling the truth. So on the order of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), we stoned her with stones. [Sahih]

Sayyiduna Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a woman was forced into adultery, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) waived the prescribed punishment from the woman and imposed the prescribed punishment on the man who had committed adultery with her.
