أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّائِغُ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَعْلَى بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ، ثنا أَبِي، عَنْ غَيْلَانَ بْنِ جَامِعٍ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ مَرْثَدٍ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: " جَاءَ مَاعِزُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ طَهِّرْنِي، فَقَالَ: " وَيْحَكَ ارْجِعْ فَاسْتَغْفِرِ اللهَ وَتُبْ إِلَيْهِ " قَالَ: فَرَجَعَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ طَهِّرْنِي، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " وَيْحَكَ ارْجِعْ فَاسْتَغْفِرِ اللهَ وَتُبْ إِلَيْهِ " قَالَ: فَرَجَعَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ طَهِّرْنِي، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتِ الرَّابِعَةُ قَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " مِمَّ أُطَهِّرُكَ؟ " فَقَالَ: مِنَ الزِّنَا، فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " أَبِهِ جُنُونٌ؟ " فَأُخْبِرَ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِمَجْنُونٍ، فَقَالَ: " أَشَرِبَ خَمْرًا؟ " فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَاسْتَنْكَهَهُ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ مِنْهُ رِيحَ خَمْرٍ، فَقَالَ ⦗٣٧٣⦘ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " أَثَيِّبٌ أَنْتَ؟ " قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَرُجِمَ، فَكَانَ النَّاسُ فِيهِ فَرِيقَيْنِ، تَقُولُ فِرْقَةٌ: لَقَدْ هَلَكَ مَاعِزٌ عَلَى أَسْوَأِ عَمَلِهِ، لَقَدْ أَحَاطَتْ بِهِ خَطِيئَتُهُ، وَقَائِلٌ يَقُولُ: أَتَوْبَةٌ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ تَوْبَةِ مَاعِزٍ أَنْ جَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ فِي يَدِهِ فَقَالَ: اقْتُلْنِي بِالْحِجَارَةِ قَالَ: فَلَبِثُوا بِذَلِكَ يَوْمَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةً، ثُمَّ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَهُمْ جُلُوسٌ، فَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ: " اسْتَغْفِرُوا لِمَاعِزِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ " قَالَ: فَقَالُوا: يَغْفِرُ اللهُ لِمَاعِزِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ؟ قَالَ: فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَقَدْ تَابَ تَوْبَةً لَوْ قُسِمَتْ بَيْنَ أُمَّةٍ لَوَسِعَتْهَا " قَالَ: ثُمَّ جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ غَامِدٍ مِنَ الْأَزْدِ قَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ طَهِّرْنِي، قَالَ: " وَيْحَكِ ارْجِعِي فَاسْتَغْفِرِي اللهَ وَتُوبِي إِلَيْهِ " قَالَتْ: لَعَلَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَرْدُدَنِي كَمَا رَدَدْتَ مَاعِزَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ؟ قَالَ: " وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ " قَالَتْ: إِنَّهَا حُبْلَى مِنَ الزِّنَا، فَقَالَ: " أَثَيِّبٌ أَنْتِ؟ " قَالَتْ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: " إِذًا لَا نَرْجُمُكِ حَتَّى تَضَعِي مَا فِي بَطْنِكِ " قَالَ: فَكَفَلَهَا رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ حَتَّى وَضَعَتْ، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: قَدْ وَضَعَتِ الْغَامِدِيَّةُ، فَقَالَ: " إِذًا لَا نَرْجُمُهَا وَنَدَعُ وَلَدَهَا صَغِيرًا لَيْسَ لَهُ مَنْ يُرْضِعُهُ " فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَ: إِلِيَّ رَضَاعُهُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، فَرَجَمَهَا " رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ أَبِي كُرَيْبٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَعْلَى.
Sulayman bin Buraydah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that Ma'iz bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you! Go and repent to Allah." He said this three times, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the same reply three times. When he said it the fourth time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "From what shall I purify you?" He said: From adultery. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is he insane?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Has he drunk wine?" A man stood up and smelled his mouth, and he had not drunk wine. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are you married?" He said: Yes. So on his (peace and blessings be upon him) order he was stoned. The people split into two groups. One said: Ma'iz died upon an evil deed. The others said: There is no repentance like his, for he placed his hand in the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They were sitting when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pray for forgiveness for Ma'iz." The people prayed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has repented with such a repentance that, if it were divided among the whole Ummah, it would suffice them all." Then a woman from Ghamid came, and she too confessed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her the same reply as Ma'iz: "Go and repent." She said: Do you want to send me back as you sent back Ma'iz? He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is it?" She replied that she was pregnant from adultery. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are you married?" She said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We cannot stone you until you deliver." A man took responsibility for her. When she gave birth, that man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We cannot stone her yet; who will raise the child?" Then a man of the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and took on the responsibility of raising the child, and on his (peace and blessings be upon him) order she was stoned.
