Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the leaders (nuqaba') of the Ansar and a Companion who fought at Badr, said: Whenever revelation came down upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it caused him great distress and his face would change. One day revelation came down upon him and he was in the same state. When the revelation was complete, he said: "Take it from me: Allah has ordained. The married with the married and the unmarried with the unmarried: for the married, a hundred lashes and stoning; and for the unmarried, a hundred lashes and exile for a year."

Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In the beginning, the punishment of a woman who committed adultery was confinement in the house, which is mentioned in verse 15 of Surah al-Nisa [Surah al-Nisa: 15]; then Allah Almighty abrogated it with: "The woman and the man guilty of fornication, flog each one of them with a hundred lashes" [Surah al-Nur: 2].
Sayyiduna Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take this from me: Allah Almighty has shown a way for them: for the unmarried, a hundred lashes and exile for one year, and for the married, a hundred lashes and stoning with stones."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), sitting on the pulpit, was saying: Allah Almighty sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth; Allah Almighty revealed His Book to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and in it He also revealed the verse of stoning. We recited it and we memorised it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) carried out stoning, and after him (peace and blessings be upon him) we also carried out stoning. I fear that after some time people will arise who will say, 'We do not find stoning in the Book of Allah,' and so they will go astray by abandoning an obligation revealed by Allah. Stoning is (prescribed) in the Book of Allah for every man and woman who is married (and commits adultery), when there is evidence against them, or they confess, or pregnancy occurs.
Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If a man is married but has not yet touched his wife and he commits adultery, there is no stoning for him; rather, stoning is for the one who has touched his wife. Otherwise, if he is free, he is given 100 lashes and exiled for one year.

Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "How much of Surah al-Ahzab do you recite? How many (verses) do you count it as?" I said: Seventy-three verses. He said: "It is equal to Surah al-Baqarah, and in it was this verse: 'When the married man and the married woman commit adultery, stone them; this is a punishment from Allah, and Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.'"

Kathir bin al-Salt said: We were writing copies of the Mushaf with Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him). When we reached this verse, Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "'Al-shaykhu wal-shaykhatu idha zanaya farjumuhuma al-battata nakalan min Allahi wa rasulihi' (When the old man and the old woman commit adultery, stone them both outright, as an exemplary punishment from Allah and His Messenger)."

The nephew of Kathir bin al-Salt said: We were with Marwan, and Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present there. Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We used to recite: 'Al-shaykhu wal-shaykhatu idha zanaya farjumuhuma al-battata' (When the old man and the old woman commit adultery, stone them both outright). Marwan said: Should we not write it in the Mushaf? He said: No. Do you not see that two young married people are also stoned? And it was mentioned that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was among us; he said: I will give you a satisfying answer about this. We said: How? He said: I would come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mention such and such, and when he mentioned stoning, I would say: O Messenger of Allah, let me write down the verse of stoning. So I came to him and reminded him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the verse of stoning, and I said: O Messenger of Allah, let me write down the verse of stoning. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am not able to do that." This and the evidence before it indicate that the recitation of the verse of stoning is abrogated while its ruling remains, and I do not know of anyone differing on this.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Previously, when a woman committed adultery she would be confined in the house, and when a man committed adultery he would be reproached and beaten with shoes. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse of Surah al-Nur: "The woman and the man guilty of fornication, flog each one of them with a hundred lashes" [Surah al-Nur: 2]. If they were married, they would be stoned according to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and this is the way that Allah has appointed for them.
