Urwah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Evil omens were mentioned in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "The good omen (fal) is the best of it, and it does not turn a Muslim back (from his purpose). When you see something from evil omens that you dislike, say: 'Allahumma la ya'ti bil-hasanati illa anta, wa la yadfa'u al-sayyi'ati illa anta, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa bik' (O Allah, none brings good things except You, and none averts evil things except You, and there is no power (to avoid sins) and no strength (to do good) except through Your help)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never took evil omens. Whenever he sent someone as an official, he would ask his name; if he liked the name, he would be pleased, and the joy could be seen on his (peace and blessings be upon him) face. If he disliked the name, displeasure would also appear on his (peace and blessings be upon him) face. And when he went to any town, he would ask about its name; if he liked it, the joy would be recognised on his (peace and blessings be upon him) face, and if he disliked it, displeasure would appear on his (peace and blessings be upon him) face.

Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no (truth in the) owl (hamah), nor in evil omens, nor is disease contagious (by itself). It is reported from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "The people of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) considered ill omen to be in the house, the riding animal and the woman." Then I recited this verse: "No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves except that it is in a Book before We bring it into being. Indeed, that is easy for Allah." [Surah al-Hadid: 22].

He said: How many a house there is in which people lived and then perished, then others lived in it after them and they too perished. This is its explanation as we see it, and Allah knows best.

We settled in this house of ours while we were many, and we perished; relations between us were good, and then our conduct turned bad; our wealth was abundant, and then we became poor." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you not move away from it, as it is blameworthy?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then what should we do with it?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sell it or give it away as a gift." Abu Sulayman al-Khattabi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is possible that he told them to leave it so that no wrong notion would settle in their hearts; when they moved away, the delusion would come to an end.
