It is narrated from Zaynab bint Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she related these three hadiths. Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I went to Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when (her father) Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) died. Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) called for some perfume containing yellow colouring (khaluq) or something else, and she applied some of it to a slave girl, then rubbed it on her own cheeks. Then she said: By Allah, I have no need of perfume, except that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying on the pulpit: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband; for her husband she mourns four months and ten days."
Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I went to Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) when her brother Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) died. She called for perfume and applied some of it, then she said: I have no need of perfume, except that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying on the pulpit: "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three nights, except for her husband; she mourns for him four months and ten days."
Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: And I heard my mother Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) say that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: My daughter's husband has died and her eyes are ailing; may she apply kohl? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No (she may not)." He said it two or three times; each time she asked, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No (she may not)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is only four months and ten days, whereas in the time of Ignorance one of you would throw a piece of dung at the end of a year."
Humayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I said to Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her): What was this (throwing of) dung at the end of the year? Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When a woman's husband died, she would enter a small tent and wear her worst clothes, and she would not apply perfume until a year had passed over her. Then a donkey, a goat or a bird would be brought to her.

It is narrated from Zaynab bint Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the announcer of the death of Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) came, Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) called for some yellow perfume and, on the third day, applied it to her cheeks and forearms, and said: I would have had no need of this had I not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she mourns four months and ten days."
Bukhari narrated this hadith.

It is narrated from Asma' bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her): When Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed me: "Observe mourning for three days, then do as you wish."
Abdullah (bin Shaddad)'s hearing from Asma' is not established; it has also been said in it 'from Asma'', so it is mursal. Muhammad bin Talhah is not strong, and the hadiths before it are more firmly established, so following them is more appropriate.
