أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ فُورَكٍ، أنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، نا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، نا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ مِنْ أَصْلِ سَمَاعِهِ، أنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْقَطَّانُ نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ قَالَا: نا شُعْبَةُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ حُمَيْدُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ أَخْبَرَنِي قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ تُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أُمِّهَا، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً تُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا فَاشْتَكَتْ عَيْنَهَا وَخَشَوْا عَلَى عَيْنِهَا فَسُئِلَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " قَدْ كَانَتْ إِحْدَاكُنَّ تَمْكُثُ فِي شَرِّ أَحْلَاسِهَا فِي بَيْتِهَا إِلَى الْحَوْلِ فَمَرَّ كَلْبٌ رَمَتْ بِبَعْرَةٍ ثُمَّ خَرَجَتْ لَا، أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا " لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي دَاوُدَ فَسُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَتَكْتَحِلُ؟ فَقَالَ: " لَا " وَقَالَ فِي آخِرِهِ: " لَا حَتَّى تَمْضِيَ أَرْبَعَةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرٌ " أَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ وَمُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ شُعْبَةَ.
It is narrated from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj (may Allah have mercy on him): Humayd bin Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) informed me: I heard Zaynab bint Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrating from her mother (Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her) that a woman's husband died, and she complained of her eyes, and they feared for her eyes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about that, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your women used to stay for a year in their worst garments in their houses; then when a dog passed by, they would throw a piece of dung, and then they would come out. Now it is only four months and ten days." In a narration of Abu Dawud, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "May she apply kohl?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." And at the end of it he said: "No, not until four months and ten days have passed."

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، نا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ نا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الدُّورِيُّ، نا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ دُكَيْنٍ، نا عَبْدُ السَّلَامِ بْنُ حَرْبٍ الْمُلَائِيُّ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَكْتَحِلُ وَلَا تَمْتَشِطُ وَلَا تَتَطَيَّبُ إِلَّا عِنْدَ أَدْنَى طُهْرَتِهَا وَلَا تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا ثَوْبَ عَصَبٍ " ⦗٧٢٢⦘ رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ، عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ دُكَيْنٍ مُخْتَصَرًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: وَقَالَ الْأَنْصَارُ نا هِشَامٌ.
It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband. She should not apply kohl, nor comb her hair, nor apply perfume except at the time of her purification, and she should not wear dyed clothes except a garment of 'asb (Yemeni cloth dyed before weaving)."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a woman to mourn for a deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she mourns four months and ten days; and she should not wear dyed clothes except a garment of 'asb, nor apply kohl, nor apply perfume except near (the end of) her purification, when she becomes pure, (using) a little qust or azfar (types of fragrant incense).
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نَصْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْفَقِيهُ الشِّيرَازِيُّ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ، أنا يَزِيدُ، أنا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا وَلَا تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا ثَوْبَ عَصَبٍ وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ وَلَا تَمَسُّ طِيبًا إِلَّا عِنْدَ أَدْنَى طُهْرِهَا إِذَا اغْتَسَلَتْ مِنْ حَيْضِهَا مِنْ قُسْطٍ أَوْ أَظْفَارٍ " رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو النَّاقِدِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ هَارُونَ، وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامٍ، وَرَوَاهُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ طَهْمَانَ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ بِمَعْنَاهُ وَزَادَ فِيهِ وَلَا تَخْتَضِبُ.
It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she mourns four months and ten days. أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْقَطَّانُ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ طَهْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ، فَذَكَرَهُ.
Hisham bin Hassan (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned it likewise.
وَرَوَاهُ يَعْقُوبُ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ، فَقَالَ " مَكَانَ عَصَبٍ إِلَّا ثَوْبًا مَغْسُولًا " أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ دَاسَةَ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ فَذَكَرَهُ وَرَوَاهُ يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ.
Yahya bin Bukayr also mentioned this hadith likewise.
كَمَا أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ إِمْلَاءً، أنا أَبُو الْمُثَنَّى، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ، نا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، نا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى هَالِكٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا وَلَا ⦗٧٢٣⦘ تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا وَلَا ثَوْبَ عَصَبٍ وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ بِالْإِثْمِدِ وَلَا تَخْتَضِبُ وَلَا تَمَسُّ طِيبًا إِلَّا عِنْدَ أَدْنَى طُهْرِهَا إِذَا تَطَهَّرَتْ مِنْ حَيْضِهَا بِنُبْذَةٍ مِنْ قُسْطٍ أَوْ أَظْفَارٍ " كَذَا قَالَ: " وَلَا ثَوْبَ عَصَبٍ " وَبَلَغَنِي عنْ عِيسَى بْنِ يُونُسَ أَنَّهُ رَوَاهُ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ كَذَلِكَ وَرِوَايَةُ الْجَمَاعَةِ بِخِلَافِ ذَلِكَ.
It is narrated from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for one who has perished for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she mourns four months and ten days. She should not wear dyed clothing, nor a garment of 'asb, nor apply kohl with ithmid, nor apply perfume, nor use dye (khidab), except at (the end of) her purification, when she purifies herself after her menstruation, (using) a little qust or azfar (types of fragrant incense)."
وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ عَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ زُرَيْعٍ نَحْوَ رِوَايَةِ الْجَمَاعَةِ أَخْبَرَنَاه أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْأَدِيبُ، أَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنِي الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، نا عَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، نا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، حَدَّثَنِي هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ، فَذَكَرَهُ نَحْوَ رِوَايَةِ الْجَمَاعَةِ وَقَالَ: " إِلَّا ثَوْبَ عَصَبٍ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ الْخِضَابَ ".
It is narrated from Hisham bin Hassan (may Allah have mercy on him) that, apart from the garment of 'asb, he did not mention dyeing (khidab).
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ، نا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الزَّهْرَانِيُّ، نا حَمَّادٌ، نا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: " كُنَّا نُنْهَى أَنْ نُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا وَلَا نَكْتَحِلُ وَلَا نَتَطَيَّبُ وَلَا نَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا ثَوْبَ عَصَبٍ وَقَدْ رَخَّصَ فِي طُهْرِهَا إِذَا اغْتَسَلَتْ إِحْدَانَا مِنْ مَحِيضِهَا فِي نُبْذَةٍ مِنْ قُسْطٍ أَوْ أَظْفَارٍ " رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِ، وَرَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَجَبِيِّ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ.
It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her): "We were forbidden to mourn for a deceased person for more than three days, except for a husband, (for whom we mourned) four months and ten days; and (we were told) not to apply kohl, nor apply perfume, nor wear dyed clothes except a garment of 'asb. But it was permitted at her purification, when one of us took the bath after her menstruation, (to use) a little qust or azfar (types of fragrant incense)."

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ، ح وَنا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ إِمْلَاءً، أنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْقَطَّانُ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ طَهْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي بُدَيْلُ بْنُ مَيْسَرَةَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ شَيْبَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: " الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا لَا تَلْبَسُ الْمُعَصْفَرَ مِنَ الثِّيَابِ وَلَا الْمُمَشَّقَةَ وَلَا الْحُلِيَّ وَلَا تَخْتَضِبُ وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ " لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ وَزَادَ الصَّغَانِيُّ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ قَالَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي بُدَيْلُ بْنُ مَيْسَرَةَ أَنَّ الْحَسَنَ بْنَ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ: " لَمْ أَرَهُمْ يَرَوْنَ بِالصَّبْرِ بَأْسًا ".
It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman whose husband has died should not wear safflower-dyed clothes, nor clothes dyed with red clay, nor jewellery, nor use dye (khidab), nor apply kohl."
These are the words of the hadith of Ibrahim bin al-Harith. Al-Saghani added some words in his narration: Budayl bin Maysarah narrated to me that al-Hasan bin Muslim said: I did not see them considering there to be any harm in (applying) sabir (aloe).

وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ، أنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ الصَّفَّارُ، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، نا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أنا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ بُدَيْلٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، ⦗٧٢٤⦘ عَنْ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ شَيْبَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: " لَا تَلْبَسُ الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا مِنَ الثِّيَابِ الْمُصَبَّغَةِ شَيْئًا وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ وَلَا تَزَيَّنُ وَلَا تَلْبَسُ حُلِيًّا وَلَا تَخْتَضِبُ وَلَا تُطَيِّبُ " وَهَذَا مَوْقُوفٌ.
It is narrated from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): "A woman whose husband has died should not wear any dyed clothes, nor apply kohl, nor adorn herself, nor wear jewellery, nor use dye (khidab), nor apply perfume."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "A woman whose husband has died should not apply kohl, nor apply perfume, nor use dye (khidab), nor wear dyed clothes, except black clothes; and she should not spend the night in anyone else's house, but she may visit during the day."
