Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Since Allah Almighty mentioned li'an for husbands without qualification, li'an applies to every husband whose divorce is valid and upon whom the obligations are binding, and likewise to every wife upon whom the obligations are binding."

Ikrimah narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Hilal bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and he mentioned the long story of li'an; at its end it says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had the oaths not already taken place, I would have dealt with this woman." Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Li'an is also called an oath.

Ikrimah narrates from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Hilal bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) accused his wife, Hilal bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was told: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will give you 80 lashes. He said: Allah, the Lord of Might, is more just than to have me given 80 lashes. Allah knows that I saw until I was certain, and heard until it was clear. By Allah! He will not have me lashed. Then the verses of li'an were revealed, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called both husband and wife when the verse was revealed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah knows that one of you is lying; so is one of you ready to repent?" Hilal said: I am truthful. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Swear by Allah, besides whom there is no god, that 'I am truthful'. Swear this four times, (then say:) 'If I am a liar, then the curse of Allah be upon me.'" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop him at the fifth oath, for it makes (the punishment) binding." Then she swore four times, saying: By the One besides whom there is no god, he is of the liars; and if this man is truthful, then the wrath of Allah be upon me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop this woman at the fifth oath, for it makes the punishment binding." She hesitated and was about to confess, then said: I will not disgrace my people. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If this woman gives birth to a child with dark (kohl-like) eyes, heavy buttocks, a thick back and very thick shins, it is Sharik bin Sahma's; and if she gives birth to one with a yellowish complexion and straight hair, it is Hilal bin Umayyah's." She gave birth to a child with the features of the adulterer. Ayyub and Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on them both) say that the man whom Hilal bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) accused concerning his wife was the brother of al-Bara bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him); his mother was black, and Sharik used to stay in Hilal's house. The Shaykh has called li'an an oath.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) separated a couple because of an accusation against the wife; both of them swore oaths before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and afterwards he separated them.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "There is no li'an between four kinds of people: (1) a Christian or Jewish woman married to a Muslim, (2) a free woman married to a slave, (3) a slave woman married to a free man, (4) a Christian woman married to a Christian man."
Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We said to them (those who cite it): You have narrated this from an unknown man and from a man who erred; and Amr bin Shu'ayb from Abdullah bin Amr is munqati' (broken). Of the two who narrated it, one attributes it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the other stops it at Abdullah bin Amr. So it is not established from Amr, nor from Abdullah bin Amr, and no one traces it back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except a man who erred.
He said: Amr bin Shu'ayb has narrated to us from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rulings that agree with our positions and contradict yours; trustworthy narrators narrate them from him and trace them back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), yet you rejected them against us, rejected his narration and attributed it to error. So, if he is one whose hadith is established, you are refuted by his hadiths in about thirty rulings from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with which we agreed and which you opposed, most of which you opposed. And if he is one whose narration is not established, you are unfair when you use his narration as evidence, and then use from it as evidence something which, even if it were established from him and he were one whose hadith is established, we would not accept, because it is munqati' between him and Abdullah bin Amr.

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no li'an between four kinds of women: (1) a Christian woman married to a Muslim, (2) a Jewish woman married to a Muslim, (3) a slave woman married to a free man, (4) a free woman married to a slave."
Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni said: This is Uthman bin Ata al-Khurasani, and he is very weak in hadith; Ibn Bazi' al-Ramli followed him (in narrating it) from Ata al-Khurasani, and he is also da'if (weak).

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a similar hadith.
Ata al-Khurasani is also not strong.

Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no li'an between four: between a free man and a slave woman, between a free woman and a slave, between a Muslim and a Jewish woman, and between a Muslim and a Christian woman."
Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni said: Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman is al-Waqqasi, who is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith).

Ali (al-Daraqutni) (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Hammad bin Amr, Imad bin Matar and Zayd bin Rufay' are da'if (weak); and we have narrated this about Hammad bin Amr from Yahya bin Ma'in and al-Bukhari. Al-Daraqutni said: It has been narrated from Ibn Jurayj and al-Awza'i, who are both imams, from Amr bin Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, as his own statement; they did not raise it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr, may Allah be pleased with them both): "There is no li'an between four (kinds of women) and their husbands: (1) a Jewish woman married to a Muslim, (2) a Christian woman married to a Muslim, (3) a free woman married to a slave, and (4) a slave woman married to a free man."

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather, that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say: There is no li'an between four kinds of women and their husbands: a Christian woman married to a Muslim, a slave woman married to a slave, a slave woman married to a free man, and a free woman married to a slave.
The authenticity of this even as mawquf (a Companion's statement) is also questionable: the narrator of the first is Umar bin Harun, who is not strong, and the narrator of the second is Yahya bin Abi Unaysah, who is matruk (abandoned). As for al-Shafi'i's statement that it is munqati' (broken), perhaps it reached al-Shafi'i as Amr bin Shu'ayb reported it from Abdullah bin Amr, and that is undoubtedly munqati'; but whoever narrated it marfu' or mawquf narrated it only from Amr, from his father, from his grandfather, and that is connected according to the people of hadith; some of them named his grandfather here, saying: Abdullah bin Amr. The hearing of Shu'ayb bin Muhammad bin Abdullah from his grandfather Abdullah is sound, but the chain up to Amr must be sound, and the chains of this hadith up to Amr are not sound. And Allah knows best.

This hadith with this chain is batil (false); the hadiths of Yahya bin Salih al-Ayli are not preserved (ghayr mahfuzah).
