Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, said concerning the third divorce: 'And if he divorces her (a third time), then she is not lawful to him afterwards until she marries a husband other than him.' [Surah al-Baqarah: 230]
So the verse carried the possibility that (what is meant is): until a husband other than him has intercourse with her; and the Sunnah indicated this. Therefore, the most fitting of the meanings of the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is the meaning indicated by the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Urwah narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the wife of Rifa'ah al-Qurazi came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I was married to Rifa'ah al-Qurazi, and he gave me three divorces. I then married Abd al-Rahman bin al-Zubayr, and what he has is like the fringe of a garment." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: "Do you intend to go back to Rifa'ah? That cannot be until you have intercourse with him and he takes pleasure in you." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Khalid bin Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing at the door waiting for permission. He called out to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)! Are you listening? What is this woman openly saying in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?"
(b) In the narration of al-Za'farani it is reported from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the wife of Rifa'ah al-Qurazi came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); then he mentioned the hadith in the same way, up to the words: "Until he takes pleasure in you and you have intercourse with him."

Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Rifa'ah al-Qurazi gave his wife three divorces, and afterwards that woman married Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that she had been married to Rifa'ah, and he had given her three divorces; after that she married Abd al-Rahman bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), and what he has is like the fringe of a garment; and she took hold of the fringe of her outer cloak. The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed and said: "Perhaps you want to go back to Rifa'ah. That is not possible until you have intercourse with him and he takes pleasure in you." She said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Khalid bin Sa'id bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting at the door of the apartment, not having been given permission. So Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) called out to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): Will you not rebuke this woman? What is this she is openly saying in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?

Hisham narrates from his father that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: A man divorced his wife, and she married another husband. He consummated the marriage with her, but what he had was (something) like the fringe of a garment; he did not fulfil the woman's desire, and it was not long before he divorced her. She came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about that, saying: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! My husband divorced me, and I married another husband. When he consummated the marriage, what he has is like the fringe of a garment; he was able to come near me only once and did not fulfil my need. Am I lawful for my first husband?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are not lawful for your first husband until the second tastes your sweetness and you taste his sweetness."

Then Rifa'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), who had divorced her before Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) married her, intended to marry her.
